ScrambleHead
While I am on Rx drugs I thought I might as well go on a beta blocker which I think I need for agoraphobia, I would definitely be able to do things I haven't been able to do before but I have no idea what they are like their side effects both long term and short term and whether they will work long term and also how reliable they are and how well they work, could someone give me some insight in to all of this before I discuss with my doctor. Guest
I take Inderal, and it works against the physical side effects of anxiety but does nothing for the mental stuff. Main side effects would probably be low blood pressure? not really sure.
ScrambleHead
Could you walk infront of an audience with it, if you otherwise had no hope of doing it before??
Chaos
I took propanlol for a while, which I believe musicians and actors etc often use for stage fright.
Guest
Could you walk infront of an audience with it, if you otherwise had no hope of doing it before?? I sort of, It would help with it - but I would still have trouble speaking and anxiety still runs rings around me in my head. The anxiety is still there, its just you don't physically feel it, It does get easier to ignore if you don't feel like shit because of it though. Parapluie
I take propranolol and it helps with the physical symptoms of anxiety, it is a beta blocker. I like it. Combined with Abilify, my anxiety is toast. I take propranolol whenever I need it, like before a demo exam, before giving a speech, etc. It really helps. sonicwhite
I'm on inderal er...60 mg...and it does help....If you havn't got a addictive persona and you are okay with just using beta blockers then it will def help really when you have to make a speech or go somewhere were you have to preform a task. notfred
I'm on 60 mg ER for a hand tremor. Propranonol is more likely to lower pulse rate then blood pressure at this dose and its effect on blood pressure is minimal. Alplenzin increases my pulse rate so the countering effect of propranonol is an added benefit.
forgetmenot220
I use 40-80 mg of propranolol PRN and I find it really helpful for the physical effects of anxiety, like others have said. I was on Buspar for awhile but that ended up not doing a damn thing for me after awhile at the max dose.
melissaw72
I am on atenolol, but for high heart rate and high BP.
Ptolomy
I have been on propranol. It helped marginally with anxiety but gave me slight hypotension.
isthisit?
i was on propranolol at one stage. it worked a lot for panic attacks then gave me hypertension. Edited May 20, 2013 by isthisit?
bookgirl
I took Inderal to counteract lithium hand tremor and it worked pretty well but caused sexual dysfunction. As others have stated, it didn't touch the mental aspects of my GAD at all, just stopped the physical stuff.
Guest
i was on propranolol at one stage. it worked a lot for panic attacks then gave me hypertension. I have to ask, Hypertension? do you mean hypotension? Or did you have a paradoxical reaction? Sorry to pry, but its been confusing me.
crtclms
I am on propranolol for my lithium tremor, but I have also used it as migraine prophylaxis (unsuccessfully). I am currently only on 40mg, although it turns out, I am actually prescribed 60mg. When I try to take 60mg, I keep falling. Even though I was on much more for migraine (120mg?), I am having more trouble with postural hypotension this time, even at 40mg. But it stops my tremor almost completely at 40mg anyway. Of course, right now we are sleeping on an inflatable bed, and it is hard to get out of one of those even when I am not staggering around.
quiet storm
I tried out propranolol for a bit for headaches. Not much success, but it wasn't a bad experience. Definitely lowered BP a bit, which is not a bad thing for me because mines always been slightly high. The biggest drawback for me was exercise intolerance. If you like to do any kind of cardio be prepared to tire very easily. First time i went jogging after I started it felt like there were 20 pound weights strapped to my ankles. Couldn't run while i was on it. Edited July 13, 2013 by quiet storm
Brian803
I took low dose atenolol for anxiety only 25 mg a day. It weighed me down. I couldn't do any lifting at the gym or even with dumbbells at home. It helped with the physical symptoms of anxiety but not the mental. Also it made me impotent. I gave it a decent try though I do remember this much as in at least one solid month if not more. None of the side effects went away. But everyone is different so don't go by my experience. werehorse
I was briefly on propanolol, but it was a clear prescription mistake for me, since I don't suffer from anxiety - docs wrote down in my notes that I did ! So it just made me feel awful, even less able to sleep, and as for sex, don't ask. Stopped taking it as soon as I could, but have heard it is very good for the physical symptoms of anxiety, and as someone else said is used for symptoms of stage fright etc.
mcjimjam
I have used Inderal on and off for a few years for both anxiety and hand tremor. I've only taken low doses. 10-20mg four times a day. I couldn't really be bothered taking it so often so I only ever really took the morning dose. It helps a little bit with the tremor and physical symptoms of anxiety but would not allow me to go in front of an audience. Perhaps a higher dose would, IDK. Frenetic47
I am on Propranolol 60mg ER currently, have been on it for a couple of years. Helps with the anxiety, and prevents migraines. Heart rate is a bit lower and I notice this when I am working out. It can be hard to really get my heart rate up if I want to do interval training and get in the anaerobic zone. I am a musician by trade. I teach and perform. Although it might take the edge off, I would say that if I were up on stage doing a solo recital of difficult music, it would only help take the edge off by 30% in that regards. It doesn't stop your mind from running away, just calms your body down. So if you are a serious performer, don't look to it as the panacea. For the day to day things, it works all right. It has cut down the frequency of my migraines.
