Hi... I'm new here... And I'm desperate. Over half my hair has fallen out. I am going bald and I am 24!!!!!! I have done research. Lamictal could be the cause. I stopped it about a week ago or so. Hair is still falling out in major clumps. And it's brittle like straw. Any help? Please. I am going crazy. I stopped the lamictal and my anxiety is over the moon. I have been uncontrollable. But today I noticed from root to tip my hair is brittle lifeless and like straw. Is that the lamictal too? I guess I had a thyroid nodule found last August. Could it be that? I just need help. I've lost over half my hair. I get it conditioned every week and it still is like straw. Please help!

Major hair loss sucks. I'm sorry that's going on for you.

Are you coordinating with your doctor or are you just panicking all by yourself?

How long had you been taking Lamictal?

Hair loss sometimes happens when starting a new med or stopping one. Depakote did it to me. The loss occurs over something like three month period after your start or stop the med. As your new hair cycle starts over the following three months, your hair grows back in. That's all about your body adjusting to something new. It takes about six months or so of torture.

You may be having a reaction to Lamictal but thyroid can cause hair loss problems, too. Big time. Again, are you working with all of your doctors?

When I had bad hair loss, I thought it was med-induced.  So I researched about vitamins responsible for hair and found that biotin was something that really contributed to good hair and nails.  I started taking a biotin vitamin then started eating almonds and cashews (when I found out I wasn't allergic to them), and my hair grew back.  I still lose a lot of hair every day, but it doesn't mean really thin hair anymore.

I went to a dr today. He dismissed me. I called my psych and have been playing phone tag. I go see my pcp tomorrow. I need answers before I do something not intelligent. I started lamictal aug 2012 100mg then went to 200mg in sept 2012. My hair fell out here and there. In jan. I started saying I was actually loosing a lot more and it was noticeable. People said I was crazy. Dismissed me. And now they can't deny the bald spots. Just about a month ago is when I noticed the clumps. And it started coming out more and more everyday. Really fast. :(:(:( so in the last month it's been unbearable.

Good to hear that you are working with your docs. Off-hand, Lamictal doesn't sound like the cause since you took it for awhile without this clumping problem. But who knows. Def see your pdoc and PCP. PCP might have more answers for you.

  • 1 month later...

Thought I had responded to this one!  I lost hair while on lamictal.  My thyroid at the time was fine and stable for at least 6 months.  It was only after going up from 100mg to 150mg on lamictal that my hair started falling out about 6-8 weeks later. It was long and thick and coarse with some curl and wave and straight pieces.  My hair dresser who I have been going to for 15 years kept tabs on it. Unfortunately it coincided with that time period where hair naturally goes through the shedding process. Half of it fell out, and then I had sections that had broken off to only 4" in length around my head.  I limped a long with it for 5 months, then had her cut it somewhere between shoulder length and chin length.  It is back to it's super thick coarse curly hair again and I kept it short, but it took anywhere from 12-18 to fully recover.  FWIW, my pdoc didn't seem over concerned about it either.  I have no doubt that it was the lamictal.
