I Love Psychiatry
Hello. I have been reading a lot about this anti-psychiatry movement recently that seems to be spreading rapidly on the Internet. I am offended by it and as a reaction I have decided to join this website because it seems to be a sensible, pro-medicine forum with rational, humble members. I suffer from very severe mental illness, I take medication for it and I am very appreciative for the help that I have received from the field of psychiatry, and, indeed, my excellent psychiatrist. Because of how much psychiatric medications have helped me, I feel compelled to have a positive voice and to express how great I believe this very well established field of medicine is because without it, I would not be able to function and I would be extremely suicidal. brokenchina
Hey, welcome to the boards. Personally I go through phases where I hate it, then love it. But I think I'm mostly thankful that I live somewhere where it's advanced and I can get treatment. Then I wonder if I'd really be as sick as I am without meds in this society if I lived in a place where they weren't available.
Wonderful.Cheese
Hey there and welcome! I agree with you totally. I am so thankful for psychiatry and those who I guess "believe in it". I get very angry reading that anti-psychiatry stuff because it is bull crap IMO. I'm glad you have an excellent psychiatrist! See you around the boards! I Love Psychiatry
Thank you very much for the welcomes. If you type into Google "psychiatry is", all of the descriptions in the suggestion box are extremely negative, such as "evil", "quackery", and "pseudoscience" etc. Obviously real medical professionals are not going to be concerned about this because they know the truth, but what concerns me is the general public perception. There is no other field in medical science that has this sort of outrageous opposition. Perhaps I should just learn to ignore all this garbage, but it is difficult when there are millions of individuals who believe mental illness is not real. By the way, I do not want my fondness of psychiatry to come across as overbearing. However, it seems that this anti-psychiatry bullshit is far more prevelant on the Internet than pro-psychiatry content, so I think it needs to be defended. WinterRosie
Hi, welcome to CB! We ask that everyone read the user agreement to get a handle on how we operate, here. If you have any questions about it, or concerns going forward, feel free to message the staff. Looking forward to seeing your posts around. There is no other field in medical science that has this sort of outrageous opposition. Perhaps I should just learn to ignore all this garbage, but it is difficult when there are millions of individuals who believe mental illness is not real. I take it that you don't speak to many nutritionists, people who work in climate science or the related various environmental impact fields, or people who endorse immunization, then. ALL science is controversial, but sometimes it becomes personal. And then, the personal becomes political, to dust off a good slogan. All of that said, I do whole-heartedly agree just the same. I think that, when it comes to brain-science, people are terrified that we'll discover new ways to do terrible things to our fellow human beings. And I can't say that I blame them for that. I do think, though, that that view doesn't take into account what it feels like to have MI.
I Love Psychiatry
Hi WinterRosie, Thank you very much for the welcome. I will, indeed, read the user agreement. I concur that many areas of science are considered, by certain individuals, to be controversial; the Theory of Evolution is a prime example of this. It just seems to me, however, that psychiatry has it harder than most. You're correct, I do take it personally, but only because I think severe mental illness is not taken seriously by the general population.
