StudentDO
Hi! I'm 31 yo 3rd year med school student dealing with bipolar. I'm not sure if its I or II since my first bout of mania was caught really early by my shrink when I was in for a two week follow up on my SSRI. My shrink said i was doing way to good for it to be the meds kicking in. I guess my mom coming with me (I was 22 at the time and in college) to tell the doc that i wasn't sleeping and spending lots of cash on stupid stuff sort of led him to this diagnosis. Due to the duality of my affect, I'm going to specialize in psychiatry, and don't give me any of that antipsych crap plz! I'm hear to share thoughts, comments, clinical experiences, etc... Daily drugs/smack/junk/dope/etc... Lamictal 200mg BID Lexapro 20mg qAM Xanax 0.5mg TID/prn
Damik
I think you will find that most people on this site are pro-psych. Personally I think its great to have that goal. I would love to have a psychiatrist who understood the frustration fear, and hope that comes with having a psychological impairment. Good luck and welcome. FlamelessCandle
Wanted to add another "welcome". I've found CB to be a great place for sharing info and getting support. It's great that you are going to practice in the field of psychiatry. Having seen things from the viewpoint of a patient, you'll have a lot to offer. olga
Welcome to Crazyboards. I ask all new members to read the user agreement so you will get a feel for how we operate around here. I hope you like hanging out here. As the others have said, we are pro-medication and pro-therapy. We also encourage people to exercise, eat healthy food and practice good sleep hygiene. We're all still cracked, but we're very healthy crazy people! olga
isthisit?
Hi I think it's great that you are trying to become a doctor, even when ill. This is from what I have experienced a pro psych site, the only negatives are when we are treated badly by the system. enjoy your stay here! StudentDO
Thank you for all the welcomes! The anti psych was more along the lines of "man don't do psych, you get paid squat and only crappy students go into it" not the psychiatry is evil type. I should have clarified that lol. AnneMarie
At $100 an hour and up, psychiatrists get paid quite well. Some charge considerably more. Many, too many, don't even futz with insurance. I think some of your fellow students are a bit misinformed about the financial potential. The stigma against MI and the bias against the MH profession in the medical community is unfortunate and IMHO a bit inexcusable. But, denial probably factors a lot of the time. Seems to me that a fair share of doctors are psychologically out of whack and come with their share of MIs just like the rest of society.
