My doctor prescribed me 2mg melatonin which I got compounded. I get to sleep but I wake up feeling groggy all morning and I'm concerned that because the dose is a little high, my body may stop producing melatonin and cause rebound problems.

I'd like to break them open and try 1mg or .5mg but I'm wondering if there's any way to salvage the leftovers (other than buying empty capsules). I talked to a pharmacist who said she thought it wouldn't be stable in honey.

Has anybody broken the compounded capsules?

Is it possible to get a smaller dose from your doc? It's my understanding that smaller doses (0.3 - 0.5 mg) are better for insomnia. I have 1mg tablets that I cut in half but that won't work for capsules.

Also what country are you in? In the US melatonin is avail OTC, but you have to look harder for smaller dose capsules because its dosing is misunderstood.
