I wish I could take Xanax. It helps me so much with ocd an social anxiety!

Recommended Posts

Wow I'm sorry to hear that. I like to abuse substances too, but never really had a thing for benzo's no euphoria for me on them no matter how many I take I just get tired and fall asleep if I take too many so I never abused them. Now opiates, well that's a different story! But if you abuse benzos you can try Zoloft! It also supposedly works for OCD too. I hated it at first! Because it takes a week to get past the side effects but after that wow it really made a difference for me. I still need benzo's prn but they are fewer and further apart. I need them for anxiety attacks. Good luck to you!

I take Prozac and it has done some help but still not like benzos. I need to learn how to deal with anxiety and get euphoria without drugs. But it's very hard especially when u had a past at abusing drugs. But I just wish I was aloud to take Xanax my mother is completly against it plus I'm in iop and na and aa so I really will never be able to have them until later on in life.

IndieVisable, please don't conflate your drug abuse with treatment. No cares that benzos didn't get you off. As you know, there are other forums to tout your drug abuse. A member's asking for help to find something that might work as well as a benzo is not an opportunity for you to reminisce.

You did see the part where I said Wow I'm sorry to hear that. and also I suggested Zoloft and wished him good luck. Damn some people are soooo sensitive and staff no less. Can't a person make a freaking point here with out getting some one's panties in a uproar?

Here's what I suggest. ask your pdoc if Wellbutrin is right for you, this is a schedule 5 drug and non habit forming. Wellbutrin and Zoloft may actually work wonders for you and you may find that combo produces more euphoria imho then just benzo's. The nice thing about that combo is it also reduces your cravings for cigarettes, alcohol and getting high. Trust me, you will love that combo :)

Sometimes you have to try different SSRI's for anxiety and such. I take lexapro, which is called "cipralex" in Canada (where I'm from) and is the "go to" drug here..

Zoloft, I found, made me more anxious, however, it works for many people.

Some other FDA approved SSRI's or SNRI's for depression, as well as anxiety are Luvox (amazing), Lexapro, Celexa (cheaper than Lexapro, which is a "better" version, supposedly, I've never been on Celexa, I find lexapro okay, not as good as Luvox), good ol' Prozac, and Cymbalta, a newer SNRI, was approved for GAD (generalized Anxiety Disorder) and then there is Buspar, a non addictive med for anxiety that is hit or miss and you need to take on a steady basis. Some meds like Seroquel, an atypical antipsychotic (AAP) in low doses can help as well.

Some docs, regardless of abuse or not, are hesitant to prescribe benzos. Some might suggest even a beta blocker. The euphoria from Xanax is pretty short lived and you generally get it from abuse. Xanax is a short acting med that you have to take multiple times a day and is best used PRN.

I'm missing a lot from my list, these are some I've had experience with. I'm not a doctor or pharmacist. I've just taken a lot of meds. Just letting you know - there are a lot of options.

I'm not an addict but I'm not even allowed lowly ativan anymore, even on inpatient. I know that they're just trying to protect me from addiction as it runs in my family but it's the only med that has ever helped me. I realized that I was abusing them when I started taking them to be more impulsive. Every time I took them, horrible things would happen.

You should think of it as a sign that whomever prescribed them to you actually cares about your well being! My personal favourite for anxiety and 'feeling normal' is seroquel. SSRIs never did much for me anxiety wise. I used to have trichotillomania but it has gotten infinitely better since I've implemented a few preventive measures and taken seroquel. Deviating away from anti depressants has helped me so much anxiety wise.

Just to offer some balance, Wellbutrin + SSRI is not a miracle cure for everyone. For me, it was complete misery. I barely slept for a week (quite literally, I slept an average of 2 hrs/DAY for a week, but not on a schedule - I was up for 38 hours straight on one bender) and it took me over a month to recover. Wellbutrin is red tagged in my file as a NEVER TO BE GIVEN TO AGAIN drug.

Your pdoc will titrate you up the dose (or should) to see how you react. I had no reaction at 150 mgs or less, but 300 mgs made me manic (medically induced mania, it was called). Just be mindful of your mind and body's reaction to it. It's normal to feel a bit "peppy" when you first start, but if it begins to interfere with sleep or concentration, make sure you let your pdoc know.

Good luck.

Yes I agree, Which is why I suggested he talk to his pdoc about it. certainly not every one will get the same results! And another downer is even when you find some thing that actually works! It can stop working for no reason :(
