tricyclics and MAOIs

Recommended Posts

You can't take any other antidepressants with an MAOI. There are interactions and risk of serotonin syndrome, and stroke.

MAOI's can be risky because of food interactions, specifically aged foods and taurine. Chocolate, cheese, grapes, olives, wine are a few. They are often used as a last resort and can be hard to live with, and you have to be careful with other medications and extremely cautious with anything over the counter.

However, when they work, they fucking do a damn good job, from what I've been told, though. Very little side effects (other than the interactions). It'll be a pain to eat out in restaurants, but if you're willing to live with it, go for it.

Also, there is a chance of mania with an MAOI, more than the others.
