Emettman
Icelandic police are coming to terms with the first time ever where they have shot and killed somebody. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-25190119 "Icelandic police have shot dead a man who was firing a shotgun in his apartment in the early hours of Monday. It is the first time someone has been killed in an armed police operation in Iceland, officials say." "Counselling is being provided to the special forces team." hagar
So, it really is a wintry utopia. How nice it must be to live in that cold, liberal bubble. What is their policy on immigration? Can I seek asylum from the US if I renounce my citizenship? Because I would love to board a one-way flight to Reykjavik.
crtclms
I've always wanted to visit Iceland, but I suspect it is extremely expensive, airfare alone. I remember my best friend and I wanted to go in the 80s, and the cheapest fare we could find from Los Angeles was a bit over 2k. This was before the internet, of course, so who knows, maybe we didn't look in the right places. The Northern coast looks unbelievably beautiful, and every picture I have seen of it's interior has been spectacular. It's on my bucket list, but I suspect it will not get crossed off. All that aside, even as a bleeding heart liberal, I consider that an appropriate use of deadly force.
San
Wow, that article is certainly different.. They give their condolences to the family.. certainly different from a lot of what is read over here, even in Canada, where excessive force isn't used as much. ETA: It also shocks me that they mention the officers being injured, once, and only in a short sentence.. what a different country.. I guess their system works well there. Emettman
, and every picture I have seen of it's interior has been spectacular. Oh yes, and just to upset those nations who get riled up about little bits of territory, Iceland is decidedly getting bigger from the middle and occasionally around the edge. San
They relate a lot of its lack of violence because of equality.. that 97% of the population considers itself middle class. I believe they're socialized. And very little drug use compared to a lot of countries. (Hey, Rob Ford....) And they're 15th in the world for legal gun ownership. The normal police force doesn't even carry guns! The special forces do. The police in the incident are undergoing counselling and there is an investigation taking places into their actions. It's stunning, really.
hagar
Well, we should take into consideration that their entire country is as big as a small city in the US or Canada, like 300,000.
saveyoursanity
Right, and everyone's related. Seriously.
Wooster
Apparently there's an app you can use to see if the person you're on a date with is related to you. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-24304415
saveyoursanity
when I read about that app it was just a proof of concept, but yeah, they could prrrrrobably use it.
neptunesky
The normal police force doesn't carry guns here either, it's a specialized unit that is armed, it's rare that people get shot by police in the UK, and all over the news if it does happen, with inquests and Crown Court involved.
