Hey guys it's now been 3 weeks since been back on medication and my weight has gained 15kg in 3 weeks!!! i am eating healthy and going to the gym 3 hours a day 5 days a week doing at least 1 hour cardio and 2 hours body building a day.

My psychiatrist simply said weight gain is a common problem on all meds and to chose if i either wanna be crazy or be fit... :(

This has just made me extremely depressed as i like to be a fit person i dont want to be unfit and large... What else can i try to loose weight

My doctor has suggested lap banding to help me if it keeps going

Puddles you got me stumped! Sounds like you understand what ever you in take determines how much workout you need. Since you eat right and damn spend 3 times more at the gym then I ever do. I'm 20 minutes running on the tread mill and another 20 minutes workout on weights. Could be your metabolism has changed. You may need to eat less at a time. You should not need to add any more time at the gym! Perhaps muscle gain is contributing to some of that weight? You could try cutting back a little on the body building. There are meds to help you lose but as soon as you stop the weight comes righ back so if you want it to stay off you have to find the right routine and diet. You know that! Good luck to you!

I'm sorry. I can relate a whole lot. I workout 5 days a week too but am overweight. It is the meds. I hardly eat.

What is,the lap banding? Like the surgery for weight loss? Don't you have to be extremely overweight for that to be an option? It doesn't seem that it would be a good long term solution to extreme med weight gain.

I know what it's like to be on a treatment order and not be heard at all.

Yes, it is surgery for weight loss.  Yes, you need to be extremely overweight to have it, but I have heard where some people are too fat and need to lose a little weight before having the surgery (for safety reasons) -- but I am talking the people who can barely walk around because of their weight.

It is a good long-term solution for some people, but others it doesn't help as much.  IMO it comes down to changing lifestyle once you have the surgery.  I've never had it done, but this is anecdotal from watching shows on TV and reading about it.  I've seen/heard about it enough though that I believe it.

15 kg in three weeks?? I'm on Abilify and I've gained about 10 kg in a year and a half and I thought that was a lot!

Don't mean to make you feel bad or anything, sorry. I know it's not your fault. Unfortunately weight gain is a common side effect of psych meds.

Definitely ask about metformin, and also perhaps a more weight neutral anti-psychotic? Abilify tends to be weight neutral for a lot of people, it just isn't for me. Everyone is different. As well, Geodon tends to be more weight neutral for some people. I hear similar things about Latuda.

If you're really nice and stable on paliperidone though, metformin might be the way to go. Metformin has to be combined with diet and physical activity to work optimally, but it sounds like you've got that part in the bag.

I saw the doctor and they said no to both Metforim and Duromine so i went and bought one of them appetite suppresents/fat burner/metabolism increaser over the counter weight loss pills.

It's called fat burner i can only give it a go since i got no other options now

apparently 5 days a week 3 hours a day at the gym isn't good enough

On the upside my liver and kidneys are healthy and my actual fat level is low

I would caution you on taking OTC diet pills of any kind.  IMO they aren't good to take, regardless as a last resort or not.  I have tried them in the past and because I took Benadryl with them by accident I had serious side effects.  Other meds taken at the same time might cause serious side effects as well.

Your pdoc needs to know what supplements you are taking because they can interact with meds. Also, IMO those over-the-counter weight loss aids are a waste of money. At least they were in my case.

When this happened to me a few years ago, my pdoc put me on naltrexone, and it has worked really well.  It is usually for people who are alcoholics trying to become sober, or for people who smoke who are trying to stop smoking, but it also works (for me at least) for food cravings.  Idk what I would have done if I didn't have this med.  Pdoc was the one who suggested it.

Wow i had huge problems cutting back on alcahol from a carton of 30 cans a week to 20 beers a week down to 10 a week and now i am finally down to 6 a week. If this will help with my alcahol withdrawal as well as weight gain then this sounds like a plus! i will make a note and ask my doctor tomorrow. Thankyou lots

You're welcome :)  I hope you are able to get this prescribed.

Nope i didn't get anything perscribed i got told weight gain is a common side effect i need to choose fitness or sanity

Honestly, I think that's bullshit. Weight gain is a serious health issue. I'm sure you're not overweight, given the amount of exercise you do. But, excess weight gain can seriously adversely affect your health.

Is there any way you can get a second opinion? I know you're on a community treatment order though, so that may not be possible.

In the meantime, keep up the exercise and healthy diet. Try to keep the alcohol to a minimum, though it sounds like you've done a really good job with that! :)

Good luck.

EDIT: we do have to make some tough choices when it comes to medication though. Sometimes some weight gain is an unfortunate but unavoidable side effect and we just have to accept that.

^THIS.  Weight gain can be serious, especially a large amount in a small amount of time.  If your pdoc isn't willing to work with you on a med that will have less side effects, I would go for a second opinion also (or at least ask about getting one).  There are lots of meds out there, with lots of different combinations.

Yeah, I am on meds that make it hard for me to lose weight. But I have been on meds that made my weight skyrocket, and I was pulled right off of them. There is a difference between having to accept that meds can cause weight gain, and being told by your doctor that you can always use a lapband. He's awfully relaxed at the idea of forcing you to undergo life-threatening surgery, which often doesn't even work.

I mean, you haven't even been ON that many meds, or am I confused? Why can't he switch things up?
