Should i drop it myself?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys i don't get to see any doctors until another whole month, i am getting really bad side effects of 9mg paliperidone.

Do you think i should drop the doses myself? currently am on 6mg morning and 3mg night should i drop it to 3mg morning and 3 mg night instead?

There is no other way i can get in sooner and with the heat here it is causing serious health concerns for me, i almost had to go to hospital today just after been in the sun 5 minutes even drinking a bottle of powerade.

Don't get me wrong i am willing to stay on meds and get better but the tolerance to heat is unbearable and as i live in a hot environment of 40C degree days during summer for 3 months i risk blacking out in the sun alot as it nearly happened today and has happened before, basically...

as soon as i spend 5 minutes in the sun i sleep for 4 hours i pass out literally from heatstroke

Now before i was on paliperidone i worked all summer in 40C degree heat gardening no problems at all so i know it's this medication doing it as i had no problems with the others listed in my sig.

Any advice???

Fair enough i just have no outside contact line to call, all i can think of is presenting to emergency but that's a 4 hour waiting cue, or i might wait until Monday and go annoy my doctor again lol who by the way i've been seeing 3 times a week for sorting everything out lol

I might see if there is an after hours doctor line i can call

Your pdoc doesn't take calls? That seems really odd to me. Maybe he'd respond if you called his office or practice and told someone that you're having serious health problems from the Invega and you're thinking of dropping your dose?

I really wouldn't recommend adjusting your meds, especially if you're dealing with AAPs, without talking to a doctor. A GP or another pdoc if you really can't get ahold of yours could likely advise you.

I called after hours hotline and they couldn't offer any advice for me but said if it gets real bad present to emergency pfft what a useless mob i thought the afterhours health line is for that reason.

I'll see if the parents have his private mobile i can call him on but to me as far as i am aware he doesn't take after hours calls and his not open sat/sun either

all i can do is see my gp on Monday again and she will either lower the dose or recommend a new medication.

I've had bad reactions to all anti psychotics at higher doses

EDIT: got a hold of his after hours line i will get a call back soon i hope

He called back, i told him the following

Dizzyness
Dry mouth
Excess saliva (yes both at different times of the day)
Headaches that come and go
Weight gain in huge amounts 15% increase in a month total
I get bad reactions to sunlight, literally heatstroke within 10 minutes in 40 degree heat almost borderline hospital case.

At 6 mg i got very few of these side effects only got the

Dizzyness
Headaches come and go
Weight gain in lower amounts

He told me to stay on 9mg and avoid sunlight... not so helpfull he said if i wanted to risk hospital again by all means go on 6mg but it's up to me now... he recommends i see my DR first thing Monday morning

so i am taking my dose down to 6mg,  3mg in morning and 3mg at night

also stated if it gets too bad go to emergency, not very happy but i'll take the risk against his advice and have my parents and family monitor me closely

Risperdal (and all of its derivatives) carries a strong caution about heat exposure.  And 40 C is some pretty serious heat!  I suspect you'll have this kind of problem no matter the dosage, but YMMV.  Be especially vigilant about exposure and be very well hydrated!

I don't think his saying he thinks you'll end up in the hospital if you drop to 6mg means he is giving you an option. I think he was saying that if you drop it, you are going to end up in the hospital, so it is a bad idea. To me, dropping 3mg after you pdoc says what yours did is non-compliant.

Stay indoors in the coolest place you can find.  Sit in front of a fan.  Drink LOTS of water and stay away from caffeine and other beverages that are dehydrating.  Eat bananas to keep your potassium level up.  Don't exercise or move around a lot.  Call your GP and/or the pdoc on Monday for further instructions.
