Does anxiety make sleep deprivation symptoms worse?

Recommended Posts

I've gotten about 8 hours of sleep over the past 4 days and I feel like death, but that aside I've noticed that when at first I don't get the amount of sleep I need, my anxiety kicks in about how horrible I'm going to feel if I don't get more sleep, so then I can't sleep, and that cycle continues. But I noticed that this morning while up at 4am to now talking to my boyfriend and just reading funny things online my sleep deprivation symptoms didn't seem as bad as when I was anxious. Does anyone else have this problem or any advice on how to deal with it/help fix it? Thanks :)

I lost my oxazepam when coming down to my parents place for the holidays so I don't have anything to calm me down until the 29th when hopefully my doctor understands and I can get a refill. I'm worried I'm going to die in the next 2 days from sleep deprivation or something. Should I be worried or is 2 more days okay to ride it out until I get my medication?

I would call your DR and explain the situation.  Sometimes they can call in a small amount until you get home.

I don't think the not sleeping would be something to be concerned about as much as the not having the benzo and going into withdrawal for a few days.

I have this problem to,i know its a really tough thing to deal w/

I agree w/ mellisaw your pdoc should be able to telephone it in to get you a few nights worth of meds

especially w/ meds that your not suppose to stop suddenly and have withdrawal symptoms

that should qaulify as an emergency

and your doc should make it happen, its his job, goodluck

but,yea anxiety and sleep problems are definatly related in most cases, anxiety is basically fear which is a kind of natural alarm system, built into us as an efficient survival mechanism, but unfortunatly in the case of anxiety has gone alittle haywire and activates at innapropriate times, this seems to show up in different ways producing burste of addrenaline(associated w/ panic/anxiety attacks)and/or producing low levels of addrenaline, which can go unnoticed during the day(when we are typically more active)but shows up alot when we settle down and prepare for sleep.

one really good thing, information ive come across you may or may not know is these kinds of problems can be fixed, and are at the forefront of alot of scientific study

but one thing is that meditation, breathing and relaxation techniques have been shown to be able to reverse this process whier its gone awry and restore ,

a state of peaceful relaxation

the thing is though w/meditation,breath,relaxation,tecniques the more profound affects are usually not immediate, and take time, and regular practice(usually at the same time each day)to show results(and so if attached to the expectation that affects should be immediate, can be dissapointing, leading to many ppl not staying w/it) but these techniques can be lifechanging and HAVE been proven to work useing modern scientific equipment to test them.

and ofcoarse thier is nothing that says you cant practice these techniques while also on prescription meds,i doupht it makes any difference you can learn and make progress all the same

just some ideas ive found helped in my case

that i hope are helpful

take care

thanks for the suggestions guys. :) I actually figured out the problem! I was really anxious so I wasn't eating, which made me feel sick AND anxious, so I couldn't sleep. Eventually I ended up getting hypoglycemia, so all I had to do was eat some food. I got some sleep, and I'm feeling a ton better! :) I've always had sleep problems I'm just glad this one was so easily solved. I feel kind of stupid for not thinking about how little I was eating that was causing a lot of the problem.
