Article on anxiety

Recommended Posts

Just read this article from The Atlantic by Scott Stossel about the author's struggles with anxiety. It's adapted from his new book My Age of Anxiety: Fear, Hope, Dread, and the Search for Peace of Mind. Curious what anyone's thoughts are about the article.

I read the first page (I don't have the attention span to read the whole thing right now) and think the author gives an excellent description of the kinds of anxiety he experiences, and the way he copes with it.  It is unfortunate nothing has worked for him to help his anxiety.

I've made it through 2 pages but it's getting late. I'll definitely finish reading it though. While I don't agree with his coping mechanism exactly I can identify with the need to do ANYTHING to ease the crippling anxiety and have been guilty on occasion of taking a little too much xanax and ending up a sleepy mess.

I also identify with the throwing up. I cannot handle vomit. If one of the kids brings it home I'm chasing them down with antiseptic spray, obsessively washing my hands, cleaning the toilet after every time they throw up, same with diarrhea bugs (actually, I think I am worse with those).

I recognize the "patchwork quilt" method of dealing with anxiety.  A little of this, a little of that, some CBT and away you go.  However, I think drinking would make me more anxious b/c I'd be afraid I'd drink too much.  Plus I might appear intoxicated and that is one of MY fears is appearing "out of it" due to meds.
