Weather affecting my mood. How does it affect yours?

Recommended Posts

Currently living in Ames, Iowa. Single digits a lot, below zero a lot. Very cold wind chills, grey skies what seems like every day. In addition to my anxiety, I was diagnosed with depression. I know that getting out and doing stuff would help both of my conditions, you know getting out to the local shop to play magic or board games, trying to make new friends. I really want to do all of these things but just feel trapped by this winter. Every time I step outside into the cold I immediately become agitated. Anyone else feel like this?

count me in, exact same issue.  it's like if i'm depressed i can't tolerate the cold, i'll do anything to just barricade myself in here until april.  i use a light box in the morning and it does help a little bit but the feeling doesn't last all day.

I agree completely, especially when the day is wet and the clouds make it dark. I thought about buying a Sadlamp, which creates a sunlike glow, to try and lift my moods on those days. Have you thought of getting something like that? Has anyone had any experience with one? Would just like to know if they're worth the money!

I guess I am the opposite ... hot humid days make me edgy and irritable and in the worst mood.  The cold weather to me is like a blessing (although I hate the ice on the ground, if any).  I just can not deal with the heat.

I'm exactly the same. I can handle the freezing, below freezing, etc, cold days, sunny or cloudy. I can't handle snow or ice very well if I know I have to leave the house at some point, even if it's minor accumulation. But heat? Humidity? Oh goodness no way. I get irritable, edgy, agitated, anxious. I start obsessing about dehydration and sun stroke and yeah, it's no good. So you're definitely not alone there!

Thanks :)  Glad I'm not the only one!

I'm variable, on the whole i get uncomfy and agitated in the Summer, my body doesn't adjust to heat well, i get over heated and this can turn to a confused state.

I like the security of winter, i can wrap up warm and do whatever i want to in terms of socialising, a lot of people seem to not socailise in the depth of winter. I'm in England so i really do understand how the sky being grey and miserable can make you feel. I love snow and ice though.

But i can be depressed whatever time of the year it is, my illness doesn't seem to care.

Have you read anything on Seasonal Affective Disorder, i know some one who only exclusivly gets depressed Oct-Apr

I have also heard good things about Vitamin D suppliments for people who get depressed in Winter as it helpswith lack of sunlight.

Do you just get depressed in Winter?

I don't handle cold winter weather well, nor do I handle hot summer weather well; I have a very narrow comfort zone, mostly due to my eating disorder. The hard part during the winter, except for the cold, would have to be the long nights, short gloomy days, and snow. The long dark nights and gloomy days really take a toll on my mood and doesn't help my depression one bit. On the other hand, hot weather tends to make me get agitated easily, not to mention overheated if I venture out in hot weather for any length of time.

Guess I don't handle weather all that great in general

My mood is definitely affected by the weather. I'm in Wisconsin and lately we have had a lot of below zero weather..almost every day for several weeks and it has been bringing me down. This winter I have found that planning and doing projects around the house brings my mood up considerably. I've done so much redecoration this winter I now get daily emails from Ikea and Gordmans.

If this weather keeps up much longer I'm going to have the cleanest most organized house in the world, lol. But if it keeps me sane I suppose it's worth it.

I live in PA, and have much of the same problem.  Even the cold doesn't bother me as much as the snow.  I have major anxiety when it comes to driving and absolutely cannot drive in the snow (PTSD) so when it snows I feel trapped and that makes me irritable and anxious.  I have a toddler and sometimes need to get out to save our (my) sanity, even if it is just to the store or out to lunch or to visit grandma.  We had a snow storm today and I did nothing but mope all day, feeling down.  What a waste of a day.  I can't wait til spring rolls around.
