YKantLaurenRead
I'm taking the haloperidol shot along with abilify, generic wellbuterin and topiramate. I just don't feel as smart as I used to be. I always seem to get things wrong or say something slightly stupid. I used to not do this. has anyone had this problem or know how long does this last? Unstrung Harp
Yes, though not with the same medications you mention. It seems to be a pretty common thing with some meds or combinations, unfortunately.
Velvet Elvis
Being MI alone can also degrade your mental performance.
dilemma
I took topiramate for awhile. It goes by the brand name Topamax in the US, and has the nickname "Dope-amax". I did much better once I was off it. I also had short term memory problems when I was on Wellbutrin. I didn't have any problems on Abilify and never tried haldiperol. Of course different drugs affect us each differently, but Topamax is well known.
jt07
Topiramate is known to have cognitive side effects. I don't have any problems with Abilify, and I never had problems with Wellbutrin when I took it. I don't know anything about haloperidol. Really, in my cocktail, the only meds that make me somewhat stupid are the anticonvulsants (Tegretol, Lamictal), but only to a certain extent. I feel like Abilify actually makes me smarter in that it speeds up my brain, unclutters my mind, and improves my focus.
forgetmenot220
topamax had some really bad effects on my cognitive abilities/functioning. I had something similar to your issues, sylvan. Words would just NOT come to me. It still happens to me a little (at 300 mg of Lamictal) but not as bad. Frustrating though. I'm not on that anymore but I do feel as if I've slowed down. My memory is worse, it takes me longer to understand some things, I just feel slower. Ask you doc...
Lemmiwinks
this happens to me too, but with a different med combo. pdoc says body will adapt with time... I'm not so sure.
shesellsseashells
I had the very same experience with Topamax that sylvan and forgetmenot did. The cognitive problems I was having were so troublesome to me that I discontinued the medication.
San
Topamax can be dulling. I had that effect for a bit, it went away, and as Velvet Elvis said, MI can screw with your cognitive functioning too.
