N00bie here...Lamictal for Cyclothymia.

Recommended Posts

HI all! I am new here and was just diagnosed with Cyclothymia and my Pdoc just put me on Lamictal(generic). Has anyone on this board heard of or contracted the rash they talk about? Steven-Johnson Syndrome? Or Aseptic Meningitis? My other question is what's the point in taking anything if the "treatment is worse than the disease"? I've also read and seen the anecdotal evidence that it increases libido. What is everyone's thoughts on that?  I haven't started taking it yet because it doesn't say when to take it, so I have a call put into him.   Anyway, thanks for reading !

Hi mrhal88,

The pdoc will have you slowly increase your Lamictal dose over a number of weeks, you should have instructions for that.  With a slow increase it is very unlikely you would get a dangerous rash.  If you do get any rash, you would have a dermatologist look at you to decide whether it could be SJS or something else serious.  Most rashes people get are not serious.

Lots of meds, including over the counter meds, can cause SJS and other dangerous rashes, Lamictal is not alone in this... so follow your pdoc's instructions, watch for rash, but don't worry too much.

Any psych med can have an effect on libido and you don't know how it affects you until you try.  At least Lamictal isn't known for negative effects.

Welcome to Crazyboards!  I ask all new members to please read the rules---it helps you to understand how we do things.  You'll find them at the bottom of the page, on the right.

Your lamictal question should probably be posted in the Side Effects forum.  I haven't taken it, so I'm sorry not to have any advice for you.  However, it is crucial that you follow your doctor's schedule of titration, as tamagotchi pointed out.

Check out the med forums, also.  You'll probably find questions (and answers) about Lamictal.
