*april*
hi Every time I click on a new page an annoying video ad for various companies pops up and I have to press the square box at the top right hand side to get rid of it. I don't mind adverts at the top of the page but they annoy me when they just pop up every time I click on a page, I'm using Internet Explorer, Windows 7. skye
I find that strange since this is a non-profit site. Hm.. does this happen with other websites? I use google chrome with ad block and it works well for those kinds of popups.
hagar
I use google chrome with ad block and it works well for those kinds of popups. Same here. I rarely get pop ups, and even those are only on porn sites.

Wooster
Sounds like you might have accidentally gotten a virus?
saveyoursanity
Yes, it does. If you have downloaded any programs recently, or installed any 'toolbars', check and make sure this isn't part of those. If it isn't, then you need to run a virus scanner for your entire system. If that comes back clean, follow these anti-spyware instructions (scroll past the general profile), which are the best I've ever read.
s4ndm4n2006
hi Every time I click on a new page an annoying video ad for various companies pops up and I have to press the square box at the top right hand side to get rid of it. I don't mind adverts at the top of the page but they annoy me when they just pop up every time I click on a page, I'm using Internet Explorer, Windows 7. First, I have no direct suggestions as related to IE of any version as I avoid it like the plague. I will refrain from suggesting using a different browser but perhaps some of the same plugins are offered for the IE brand browser too. 1. Ad Block and Ad Block Plus: Blocks the ads from most sites including pop up ads. Also a nice benefit is the ability to watch youtube videos without having to endure the ads on some videos that precede the actual video. 2. Ghostery: Block the ability of sites for obtaining information from your computer for ad and other purposes. Ghostery will identify any affiliated spy-like-ware on the site that will get your browsing information and allow you to block each one individually or just block everything. Works very well for me, but keep in mind there are some sites where it will keep you from doing certain things you need to unless you whitelist the site, like for example, a site where you might need to actually use it for ordering something, sometimes Ghostery can keep it from working until you whitelist it. These things help tremendously and I very rarely get the rogue pop up ads anymore. Hope this helps. Sounds like you might have accidentally gotten a virus? While this may be true it's not necessarily enough information to assume this. There are plenty of sites out there capable of feeding you pop up ads without even going as far as installing adware, spyware or any other type of trojan or virus. I seem to be getting them on every site, it's by something called adchoices Removal of "adchoices" http://www.2-spyware.com/remove-adchoices.html
idiopathy
the best way to permanently get rid of digital detritus is to - unfortunately - cut your losses and format. but if you can't or won't for whatever reason, your next best option is a virtual wipe. google and install the following programs: revo uninstaller, ccleaner, malwarebytes, and - unless you are wedded to your AV - either AVG (free) or Kaspersky AV (not perfect, but better than most). Once everything is ready to go, start by popping the hood (ctrl + alt + del) to see a) what programs are running (close everything you can), and b) what processes are running (be careful, but stop what you know you don't need). Now go to your start up menu. Most of what is set to start with your computer isn't needed. lose it. Now run MWB. Follow the steps. Run CCleaner. Same thing. Now (and this is the best part), open Revo. Finally, you are the master of the useless bloatware!!!! uninstall until there's barely any left. [Now, personally? if I had chrome plus another browser, I'd atake this opportunity to lose chrome. Up to you.] Restart. Notice whether the computer is booting faster noticeably. You might have to repeat the whole procedure more than once to get everything.
