Gearhead
New Gender Options for Facebook Users I don't use Facebook and never have. I find the entire idea creepy. To me, it's like saying "Please, come stalk me!" I know that far, far more information about my life than I find acceptable is already available to people online whom I don't think should have it, but I refuse to make it easier for anyone. So bearing that in mind, and remembering that I have no way to go and examine these options for myself, what do all y'all think of Facebook's new gender options? Is it progress of the GLBTQ community, or a more effective way for them to make money off of you, or both?
confused
I didn't know they did that. Yes, you can customize gender and the pronoun used (male, female or neutral). I think it is a little of both. They collect all sorts of data and that is more info but I think it is progress, too
malachite
Hell, yeah, they did. I immediately changed my gender to support the myriad and fluidity of ALL genders.

Mim
I wrote in my own in. My page is shut down to pretty much everyone but friends, and my name is a pseudonym. As far as Facebook privacy, if I can shut it down/make it private, it's done. Heh. Given that there are only a handful of people who see the things I post anyway, I may as well be honest. I hold no illusions about where my information goes, and yeah, it does bother me sometimes, but it's also the most reliable way I have to stay in touch with family who would be vexed with me/get worried and hunt me down if I stopped. And hey, maybe the targeted advertising will stop showing me that HOT GIRLS LIVE IN MY AREA. Edited for grammar. My English. Let me show you it. Edit: I do think it's a good thing, for the pure reason that it allows those of us who identify as non-binary to make that known if we want. I don't doubt that they'll make money off of it, as well, but then that's the nature of the internet, especially social networking. Edited again: Except for here. I don't begrudge this place a single cent. Done talking now, I promise. Edited February 17, 2014 by Mim
water
I heard about this last week and thought it was pretty cool. I was thinking of changing my gender on fb, just because. :-}
*april*
hot girls live in every area according to my computer, can you adjust the privacy settings on your facebook so only your friends can see your gender?
Mim
hot girls live in every area according to my computer, can you adjust the privacy settings on your facebook so only your friends can see your gender? Yeah, you can. It's under the basic information setting; there's a dropdown where you can change it or set up your own custom privacy setting. Mine is in Pirate English, or I'd screen shot it for you.
crtclms
The timeline is harder to make private than the rest of the stuff. I finally figured it out by googling "Hide Facebook timeline," I can't remember it off the top of my head. But I wonder what prompted them to do this?
