"I don't think this is reverse discrimination at all. I think this is really about a group of people, led by Senator Yarbrough, who are wanting to discriminate against the LGBTQ community. No one is not allowing these individuals to practice their religion at all," says Wingspan Executive Director Carol Grimsby.

Great.  "For religious reasons"?  That's an awfully broad and vague thing to put in a law.  "I'm sorry ma'am, you can't come into our restaurant because we have a religious objection to ladies wearing pants, it's immodest."  "I'm sorry sir, our religion prohibits tattoos so you can't get on this bus."  "Excuse me miss, I can't allow you in the bookstore because our holy book says that ladies shouldn't learn to read."

The 'sincerely held religious beliefs' crap is also being applied to the medical profession in a number of states.  Abortion is the most notable example, but it is also being thrown at Plan B contraception and other procedures.

i have no faith and less trust that Governor Brewer has either the courage or intelligence to veto.

Gov. Brewer is as much a tool of the  GOP as the govenor (small caps totally appropriate) of the Mitten state.  The policts of the modern era really want to make me hurl.

That's messed up ... you'd think because same-sex marriage is becoming legal in many states, this type of thing wouldn't be happening.

I think it's precisely why it's happening.  Homophobic people are worried that their way of life is being threatened, and they are rushing to protect it.

This. They're doing it because they're worried. As abhorrent as this is, the extreme nature of it will probably help the gay cause.

And they can kiss my gay fucking ass, too.

Please forgive me, but I don't understand this article ... wouldn't vetoing the anti-gay law be a good thing?  I'm not good on understanding some things, so I'm probably wrong about this.  I'm all for things being open, public, to everyone, no matter who they are.  I just don't understand the article.

I am at work now with a migraine so this won't make sense.

From what I heard on the radio today everyone is up in arms about the bill which would allow businesses (restaurants?) to refuse to serve people based on religious observance.  In other words, rabid zealous religious homophobic idiots of Arizona can refuse to serve someone because they are gay.

Even Marriott Hotels are angry.

The governor will veto this bill or we will eat her head for breakfast.

Oh ok, that makes sense.  I have been hearing this all over the news.  And yes, from what I've heard it is restaurants also.

And, now, this, one of many inflammatory 'opinion' pieces circling round and round... http://www.azcentral.com/opinions/articles/20140223religion-freedom-law-rue-kupec.html

Opponents of the proposed amendment to Arizona’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act are putting the people of Arizona in a high-risk disaster zone when it comes to their First Amendment freedoms.

In America, we live by the basic principle that you don’t forfeit your religious freedom just because you step outside the four walls of your home.

Congress passed the federal RFRA, the legislation after which the Arizona RFRA is modeled, for that very purpose.

Arizona’s RFRA, as it currently stands, does not contain the necessary specificity regarding who can use RFRA for protection if the government discriminates against them because of their religious faith. Contrary to the voices that oppose protecting religious freedom for all Arizonans, Senate Bill 1062 and House Bill 2153, which were approved last week, will not allow people to do “whatever they want” in the name of religion.

The use of the amended RFRA will only come into play when the government’s law inhibits someone from freely acting in accordance with his or her faith, as has always been the case. And even then, sincerely held religious beliefs will continue to be balanced against state interests. So, Arizona will always be able to make certain things — like murder — crimes even if someone says that his religious beliefs require him to kill someone.

The promises of losing Super Bowl XLIX and its expected economic boost may stay the governor's hand. But she tends to be a loose-cannon-conservative, under the best circumstances.
