kpix
Hey everyone, I just started taking prozac again after about 4 years on natural supplements (SJW) and a stint on lamotrigine (which gave me the dumbs, big time - could barely finish a sentence.) I've been told by various psychologists and psychiatrists that I have BPII (which I disagree with), borderline personality disorder (or at least, fulfill quite a bit of the criteria) and cyclic depression. Anyway, after moving house and being down in the dumps for over a month (not major depression - just outbursts of sadness and anger at myself and others, paranoia, not wanting to see friends, snapping at work, suicidal ideations, the usual) I've taken prozac again. I have to say, I could feel it working almost immediately. As in, the constant stream of "you suck, you're fat, your boyfriend hates you, he's going to leave you" thoughts have all but vanished. Weirdly, I feel like my 12 year old self before the black dog ever took hold of me (I'm 26 now, for reference.) Now this is all well and good but 2 problems I am encountering are a complete LACK of appetite. As in, I ate 4 pieces of bread yesterday and it's been 17 hours since I last ate something and I'm not hungry at all. Secondly, at night my mind is ticking over like a machine and I feel like my eyes are peeled back in my skull and I can't sleep at all. Just wondering.. have any of you experienced this on SSRIs and does it get better? I'd like to not be depressed/anxious AND be able to eat normal meals, sleep... etc. Curious for your thoughts! horsediva
Hi kpix, Glad to hear Prozac is working for you. Personally, I've never experienced that on Prozac, but I did experience it on Wellbutrin SR at a dose of 150mg. The not eating, that is. However, Wellbutrin isn't truly a full on SSRI alone. I chose to stop Wellbutrin due to that fact because the not eating at the time was doing more harm than good. The not being able to sleep, etc is probably just the "high energy" and "activating" effect that some medications have at the start. It will usually die down in a few weeks. melissaw72
Welcome to CB I have not encountered loss of appetite from Prozac. Maybe your stress level is higher than you think from moving, which is causing your appetite to go down?
shesellsseashells
Prozac and other antidepressants can induce mania/hypomania in some individuals with bipolar disorder. That's what comes to my mind when I read your description of your symptoms right now, although, of course, I am not a medical professional. Have you ever experienced the ticking brain/sleeplessness symptoms before? You should check in with your doctor ASAP if the meds are causing mania/hypomania. Loss of appetite is also a side effect of Prozac. Edited February 26, 2014 by shesellsseashells
mcjimjam
I had both of those side-effects with Prozac but they did get better.
kpix
Thanks for the repsonses guys. Shesellsshesells - I did consider the hypermanic thing.. but I don't think so, because I've not been 'hypersexual'.. and in the rare instances I've felt that way I am not experiencing that hypersexualised feeling at all. Overall I just feel pretty normal, just unable to sleep and eat :/
melissaw72
I was just thinking, if I don't eat much during the day (for whatever reason), I can't sleep. I have to have food in me to sleep. How about like a milkshake or something? Anything you could get in you, might help you to sleep.
rowan77
I've been taking 20-40mg prozac over the past 3 years and did not experience those symptoms. My pdoc told me to take it in the morning as it can be activating

But then again when you go in, pay $150 - $300 per sesh, everyone could seem 'sped up.' IE here's my history, here are the problems. FIX
mjs190
I took prozac for almost two years and never had a single side effect from it; that is until it pooped out and I switched to Lexapro. Fast forward another year and a half and I am now back to Prozac as Lexapro pooped out, as well. It has been less than a week, and already I have noticed I literally eat nothing. To put this in perspective, I take 200 mg of Seroquel XR, on top of it. So that really says something about the appetite thing haha. mjs190
I'd also like to add that Prozac is known to cause "Anorexia" (loss of appetite, not the disorder) in 10-15% of people that take it, according to Medscape. Also, it is approved for Binge Eating Disorder, so that should shed some light on the appetite decrease, too.
