ssris for anxiety

Recommended Posts

Yes, I take citalopram (Celexa) mainly for anxiety. I doubt I could live without it. Generally, SSRIs take up to six weeks to fully kick in, though you might feel an effect sooner. However, sometimes SSRIs make anxiety worse before they make it better, so hang on, it does get better.

I did not have success with SSRIs in battling anxiety.  Sometimes they would rev me up more.  But I also have BP II, so that figures into my mix and YMMV.

I have had the best luck on a combination of a beta-blocker, Gabapentin and Klonopin.

I hope Lexapro improves your anxiety level. You may experience some relief in the first two weeks (better sleep, more energy, increased appetite).  Your depressed mood may not lift for 6-8 weeks.

Do you see a therapist?

Most SSRIs take about six weeks at least to kick in.  Also, you are typically started at a low dose and ramped up slowly, and so you might not feel any efficacy from it even after six to eight weeks.

Lexapro though is actually a bit more fast-working than a lot of SSRIs, at least for many folks.  Also with many SSRIs, you may feel some sort of effects, even if only side effects, fairly early in.  Many side effects don't stick around though.

SSRIs are quite commonly prescribed for long-term anxiety management.  I was prescribed Lexapro for anxiety management back in 2011, but it turns out my anxiety was actually due to a hypomanic episode (bipolar disorder,) and since that was undiagnosed and not treated with an antimanic at the time I sorta flipped out batshit style instead.  But there are many here who are successfully treated with SSRIs for anxiety.

I've had success with Luvox and Lexapro (currently on Lexapro)

It can take a couple weeks, like Mir said. I found Luvox to be faster, though.

i see a therapist from time to time, im not crazy about her, but maybe i should lighten up.  lexapro has also crushed my sex drive in a matter of days. any advice on that?  olanzapine did similar things to me and m y pdoc gave me a bunch of cialis samples to help cope.  i just think its weird that a 25 year old man has to take boner pills...

I've always had pretty good luck with the SSRIs...yeah, sometimes it's a few weeks to kick in- you just gotta push on through.

Is the cialis working for you?

I had success with Prozac and Paxil and Paxil CR until they pooped out on me.  I also did well on Luvox CR until it had an interaction problem with another med I was taking for migraines, which were a major problem at the time.  By the time I tried it again, it was generic, and I had a reaction to the generic. I am now on the sixth week of generic Zoloft building up to 150 mgs and it has just started really working well.  SSRIs typically take between 4-8 weeks to start to really work. Hope this helps.

No success with ssris for anxiety here. The ones I tried either did nothing or made me depressed and disinterested in sex.
