leadinglady
What is the best way to treat the headaches brought on by carbamazepine? Is this a side effect that subsides once I get used to it or will I just have to take ibuprofen constantly? Thanks!
jt07
It will subside once you get used to your dose. I got headaches at first, but now I rarely get headaches. In fact, I used to get headaches often before being on it and was pleased that carbamazepine seems to eliminate them completely. As far as dealing with the headaches in the beginning of treatment, I just used OTC pain relievers. Edited March 4, 2014 by jt07
MiaB
When I was on it I remember reading somewhere (possibly crazymeds) that it was a contradiction that a med supposed to help with neuropathic pain could actually cause headaches, but that it wasn't all that unusual. I would follow the advice of jt07 above - hopefully your body will settle into it. If you find though that you're going for weeks having to knock back ibuprofen (which would be extremely bad for your gut), definitely raise the issue with your pdoc. I couldn't tolerate the med because it gave me a bizarre gum infection that wouldn't go away; I do better on trileptal, which is tegretol's "successor" and has fewer side effects. Good luck!
