cutegiantsquid
Pretty new here - I'm a baked goods slinger by day, children's writer by night. I live with my husband, cat, and turtle. I got diagnosed with bipolar disorder about a month ago after being on prozac for anxiety and depression. I had a major depressive episode followed by a complete freak out at work which landed me on lamictal. I just started taking 100mg and I'm still riding out the side effects, like this blessed insomnia which has me up at 3 in the morning every day... Anyway, just looking for people to talk to who get it… it's hard to talk about with people who can't read my mind. Nice to meet you all. :-)
mcjimjam
Welcome to CB I hope the insomnia settles down soon and Lamictal works for you. It was a rocky to start with for me too but ended up helping a lot.
upset.the.world
Hey I was a bipolar child who grew up thinking I was just a normal kid who sucked at being a good kid compared to all the other kids. I got diagnosed when I was fourteen and I was like, "...Oh." Not that being diagnosed with bipolar disorder in high school was a jolly experience, but it was a relief learning that being 'me' wasn't my 'fault'. As my psychiatrist's sage decision, I started an antipsych straight away, gained thirty pounds, lost all thickness in my hair, and slept thirteen hours out of every day for three and a half years. But I was mostly stable, right? Ick. No, it's not all like that. My psychiatrist back then was a gem. She was just trigger happy with the meds cuz she would've rather had me tranquilized than psychotic and suicidal. I get that. Anyway, since then, I've been on all kinds of junk and I've had a habit of getting all the side effects on the list plus all the side effects only, like, two people have ever gotten in studies. Lamictal was minimal for me, though, oddly enough. All my pills effect my sleep, so it's kind of a matter of which side effect is winning at the time. I just went off a few evening prescriptions a week ago, so the Lamictal's keeping me up forty hours out of forty eight lately. Yay. Whatever. It'll regulate. Anyway, welcome to CB

cutegiantsquid
Thanks for the nice welcomes - damn, sorry I didn't reply earlier. Upset.the.world, I kind of get what you mean. My psychiatrist prescribed me after one meeting and I'm starting to get scared that he's not really helping me. He's been helpful recently, but he only recommended therapy after three months and already put me through four medications, and I'm still upping and downing. Not to sound awful, but it's a little comforting to know I'm not the only person going through that - not that I WANT you to go through something like that, that sucks. Just not alone, you know. As my psychiatrist's sage decision, I started an antipsych straight away, gained thirty pounds, lost all thickness in my hair, and slept thirteen hours out of every day for three and a half years. KillBytes
I was diagnosed BP back in 1988. At first I denied it. I think the stigma was worse then, it was called manic depressant back then and movie stars did not come out about having it back then. Now every one seems to have it You'll be just fine. Nothing has changed except now they have given you a label. I would say coping skills are just as important as meds, and for me, even more important then meds. Coping is every thing. Don't become overly dependent on the meds, they are not a cure all. Coping skills is very important! Nice to meet you.

Hi, I'm a clinician, and I'm bipolar. I love turtles and writing and stuff...I'd love to chat. Mmm, you still having insomnia? You aren't as well treated as you could be with that kind of nagging symptom. Lamictal is pretty weak and usually more for bipolar II -- have the docs said anything about an adjuvant that would help you sleep?
