Fill in the blank gender. :D It'd be nice.

But I think that's part of the software thingy.

I was wondering about that.

edit:I was thinking along the lines of FB. A list or something but I like fill in the blank better.

I think there are as many genders as people.

Water,

I was listening to NPR and thought about you

Dave Barry, humorist, is in town

his newest book is about raising his 14 year old daughter

he was soooo funny and I thought about you and your daughter

he took his daughter to a Justin Bieber concert and she pushed through the

crowd to the stage and threw her Bat Mitsvah (sp?) invitation

very funny

It's the software.  I requested more options a few years ago and the developers made fun of my and pointed me to the wikipedia article on biological gender after I pointed them to the one on genderqueer.

You're kidding?  What jerks.

thank you for standing up for gender equality on the IP.board.

As a female web developer, this surprises me not at all.  :/

I hate (really hate) to bring up crazymeds, but as far as I can tell, they're on the same system, and they have six gender options other than male and female available under their "my settings".

Thanks.

I'll ask Jerod how they are doing that.

As far as I'm concerned, any bad blood between us and CM is way in the past btw.

Okay, thanks - I didn't want to offend.  I have an account there for the sake of it, but prefer the way things are run here.

I attempted a screenshot of their gender breakdown for you, but apparently that's too complicated for my brain to do right now.  But it is:

Not telling

Female

Intersex

Male

None/Neuter

Other

Transgender FTM

Transgender MTF

Transgender NOS

Intersex

i first saw this as an acronym added on glbt elsewhere and asked what it meant, i just got told "intersexed" so i asked what that meant and i got yelled at [a lot] and called many unsavoury things

anyone care to shed some light? forgive my ignorance

yes, hermaphrodites/intersex are people born with characteristics of both genders

i think that is both sexes, not genders

if you do work this out VE, or even if not, maybe a definition list could go with it because it is confusing for some

i hope that doesn't come across wrong, i'm just naive on these things

some people are born with parts of both genders.  I believe this is intersex.

thanks, i did google and wound up more confused

I always thought it referred to people who had previously been called hermaphrodites, but maybe not.

REad Middlesex.  Excellent book.

You do not always have visible parts of "both" to be considered intersex.  There can be things to do with hormones, invisible-to-the-eye bodyparts, and more.

I would love more than two gender options.  'Course, I'd love something other than "trans FtM" or "trans NOS" or WTF eewww but it'd still be better... lesigh.

either way I make do.

Those were just options chosen by CM, probably with some sort of discussion with their members.  If it turns out it's possible to add additional options to CB's list, then I don't see why VE would have to be beholden to the CM list.  And if I use any more acronyms in this post, I may have to stick a pen in my eye.

So why not do a blank field, and members can fill it in themselves?

edit: we can offer a list of suggestions

VE, just want to kick in that you rock for sticking up for this. It's much appreciated.

I don't mind the "not telling" option, but if others make it on board, will use them with a smile on.

Discussions have been had, greater options will be added. ;) Keep your eye out!

Edit: Woooo, 2000th post!

Edit2: Trust me, I wanted a fill-in-the-blank and wasn't the only one, but we literally can't set that up.  Then I wanted "check all that apply" but apparently we can't do that either. *kicks software* But there will be more options.  Huzzah!

I believe we went with "not telling."  Some things were condensed into a singular term otherwise we'd have a huge list.

ah.

I was just thinking of myself. I am female, but yet.....sometimes I wonder if there is a bit of male in me. I don't mind telling, I just don't have a 'term' for me. :-}

You might be pleased with the options that will be made available.  Again, we had to condense some things down, rather, group some identities into a single term, because believe me I could pull up one gigantic list of individual gender identities but I think both the software and VE might kill me or something.

Yeah I'm pretty excited/happy. :) This discussion came up (again... I know I asked a long time ago and I doubt I was the only one ever, but it wasn't possible with the software at the time) right after I'd spent the whole day filling out Social Assistance paperwork that kept making me fill out "pick one of the two: male/female" checkboxes.  So it was an instant pick-me-up, seriously.

I know my ideal would still be fill-in-the-blank, like I said.  And I'd honestly love to have a gigantic fucking list that had every possible identity I could think of and dig up from the depths of the Internet, you know?  Also there's that thing about it being a group effort and not up only to me. ;P   Oh and the software limitations. So some stuff's not feasible.  So we've been doing our best to make it inclusive, broad-spectrum, not super-long, and easy to understand.  Quite the balance you understand.

  • 2 weeks later...

if anyone is interested, NSW australia just passed law that you can now be recognised legally as neither female nor male. I think other states have similar, and it is fairly low grade "xx" in place of "m" or 'f' on your license, but thought i'd mention it after hearing it

I would prefer we have "cis-gendered" so as not to perpetuate the idea that trans is "other". But apparently "cis" isn't as widely known/used.

My argument is that if we are offering people space to say they transitioned/are transitioning/are trans, we are providing a better opportunity for self identification, but also requesting trans people reveal more information than cis people.

I never knew about the 'cis' term.  Makes complete sense. Discussing gender options for a mental health forum is so cool.  Gender is unique, like personality and chemistry. Unfortunately most of society cannot take the sex out of gender.

I am bigender. My Sexual orientation definitely goes in the dick direction but my gender is mostly male. Understanding this has been a revelation particularly with my computer work history. Always the only woman in male dominated work. I act like The Big Man in this full figured feminine body with the mouth and humour of a guy but very sensitive and vulnerable, easily teased and hurt. This confuses people.

There is also third gender. Neither man nor woman. I like that one.

This I found on Wikipedia. Very interesting.

"An alternative to androgyny is gender-role transcendence: the view that individual competence should be conceptualized on a personal basis rather than on the basis of masculinity, femininity, or androgyny"

For some unknown reason while eating lunch today my girl points to these parts of her body and asked if I knew what they were called.

Vagina - non-electronic cell phone

Butt - butunia

Boobs -  bacoobayes

She made all this up.  Then she asks if I know the word for a man's 'thingie'.

Spaghetti and meatballs.

omg

My sexual orientation is very much 'gender transcendent'... For a long time I've said, "it's the person not the parts".

Looking at one's own gender identity in similar manners can be interesting as well, I think.

Spaghetti and meatballs, eh?  I'll have to ask Mr W about that one. :D
