I've been dealing with depression for such a long time. Currently on to the next medication Abilify. I was hospitalized this month and went inpatient not on any medication. So they added Abilify and the side effects are so annoying:

  • increased pulse when standing up
  • still depressed

and the worst one yet, ANXIETY/ RESTLESSNESS.

I seriously can't even stand still. Sitting on the couch or at the kitchen table is like torture right now. The only time I feel calm is on my stomach laying on the floor or my bed. Anyone else experience this restlessness. I also see a naturalpathic doctor for my depression/anxiety so instead of something like ativan I take l-theanine. This is so uncomfortable, but this medication is like the last resort!

Thank you for such a quick response. Currently I'm in a intensive outpatient therapy program so I'll see the doctor on Monday or Tuesday when I go. Do you happen to know what medications have been used to help with side effects that I can ask my doctor about? Currently on 10mg of Abilify.

Propranolol (Inderal), cogentin, artane, even some benzos. But your doctor will immediately know what the problem is and how best to treat it without you suggesting meds to him.

Thanks, I will talk to him Monday or Tuesday and discuss what he thinks I should do next. I'm currently trying to type laying down on the carpet because every position is uncomfortable.

I am there with you in regards to anxiety and restlessness (I'm on abilify 30 mg). Talk to your doctor, I know I am going to.

Thank you. It seems that many on 30mg have felt this way only. I wonder why I feel this restlessness at such a low dose. I must say doctors have determined that I'm very sensitive to medications and have had problems in the past.

I can sympathise, I had this for a month on Abilify, I've since lowered my dose & added Buspirone & my anxiety is slightly more bearable. Good luck with the doctor :)

I see. So I guess a lot of people experience this. Buspirone, I've tried that one too in the past. Thanks for the good luck!

Inability to sit still or extreme discomfort sitting still is not anxiety. That is akathesia. I don't know if that is what you are experiencing or not, but your pdoc would know and there are meds for this as I mentioned above.

I had extreme anxiety (not akathesia) when I was titrating up on Abilify. I thought I would lose my mind. It only went away when I was on it a few weeks and when I reached 10 mg. It takes a while to reach a steady state in your blood since it has such a long half-life.

I was on Abilify taking doses 10-30mg. I felt dreadful on it, restless, agitated, anxious, insomnia and the dreaded akathisia.

It didn't help me but has been a real lifesaver for many people here on Crazy Boards
