IsabelleStPierre
Not too long ago I started taking topamax as part of my migraine preventative routine, 50 mg twice per day. Not a huge dose but large enough to help with my migraines. The problem is I no long get hungry and in the first week of taking topamax I lost 10-pounds (10-pounds I really couldn't afford to lose). My tdoc isn't pleased with the weight loss as I just managed to get the 10-pounds on! (I have an eating disorder so my tdoc tends to obsess over my weight almost as much as I do). Basically my question is, does the side effect of loss of appetite go away with time?
San
I found it did a bit, but not much.. I'm still losing weight at 200mg, and I've been on this dose since January.. No appetite.. I might have to drink extra calorie shakes or take something else to try and get my appetite back. I take topamax as a mood stabilizer, and it works. I'm glad it works for your migraines. No appetite.. I take topamax as a mood stabilizer, and it works. One of the reasons my doctor specifically picked topamax is because it works for migraines and is also a mood stabilizer, so it's like a twofer drug for me. It's not good new that you've been on it for about three months and still have a loss of appetite. Guess I'll just have to schedule mealtimes so I eat at regular intervals whether I am hungry or not (just sort hard to do when you have issues around food in general to start with)
Stickler
For me the appetite suppression's a Good Thing, as I waddle to stoutness. I seemed to be slowly regaining appetite, but they just bumped my dose up...And I'm still overweight anyway. Blah.
IsabelleStPierre
For me the appetite suppression's a Good Thing, For me, as one who battles a restrictive eating disorder and had just managed to get my BMI up to 18; medication that causes me to lose my appetite isn't good. My last tdoc appointment she ambushed me with wanting to take me to the nurses office down the hall for a weight check. (She also wasn't happy to find out I had a BMI calculator on my phone either). I really do hope this side effect lessens in time because the topamax is helping with my migraines....
