Little Girl Taken Out Of Christian School After Told She's Too Much Like A Boy

'"You're probably aware that Timberlake Christian School is a religious, Bible believing institution providing education in a distinctly Christian environment," read Doris from a part of the letter.

The letter goes on to say that students have been confused about whether Sunnie is a boy or girl and specifies that administrators can refuse enrollment for condoning sexual immorality, practicing a homosexual lifestyle or alternative gender identity.

The letter goes on to reference specific Bible verses that affirm these beliefs.

The letter reads in part, "We believe that unless Sunnie as well as her family clearly understand that God has made her female and her dress and behavior need to follow suit with her God-ordained identity, that TCS is not the best place for her future education'

Maybe there is more to this story.  I don't think the bible says anything about being a "tom-boy".  It doesn't sound very Christian-like to me.

I feel sorry for the little girl who misses her friends.

Pathetic. It's not difficult to find a scattering of stories where most or all of a class have had their heads shaved to help the cancer-affected one feel better.

When the school authorities are childish, what hope is there?

Actually, there is a bit in the Bible (Leviticus maybe? I can't look it up right now) about women being forbidden to wear men's attire. It was seen as a form of dishonesty, of trying to pass yourself off as something you weren't; also Judaism heavy on separating things: the profane from the sacred, as in Shabbat from all other days. That's the root of it. On the seventh day God rested etc.

Excuse me. I have a seven year old nephew bouncing off the walls.

Gearhead, I believe you're thinking of Deuteronomy 22:3 "A woman must not put on men's clothing, nor shall a man wear women's clothing"

Deuteronomy 22 also includes other rules that are followed by Orthodox Jews but are not taken seriously by most Christians, such as Deuteronomy 22:9-12, "You shall not sow your vineyard with a second kind of seed, else the crop from the seed you have sown may not be used.  You shall not plow with an ox and an ass together.  You shall not wear clothes combining wool and linen.  You shall make tassels on the four corners of your garment with which you cover yourself."

So, if anyone complains about a woman wearing men's clothing or vice versa, and says anything about this being "in the Bible," you can can quote Deuteronomy 22:11-12 at them, and ask them if they make sure to always wear tassels on the four corners of their garments (known as tzitzit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tzitzit), and if they test their clothes for mixed wool and linen (known as shatnez http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shatnez and you can have your clothing sent to a special lab to be tested)

I used to be religious... until I realized it basically strips you of everything you are.

The problem is not about religion per se, the problem is that many people and groups use religion in this way.  Some Christian groups are pretty scary to me, but I also see that Christianity can be inspiring and liberating for many other people, and promote kindness and acceptance.

I love it when ignorant homophobes quote Bible verses.  I wish I had been there to quote some back at them.

I wrote a huge post here with lots of Bible quotes, but I'll edit it out and just say that Leviticus 18:22 "Do not lie with a male as one lies with a woman" is a tiny little rule buried in Leviticus among many, many other rules that most Christians do not follow.

Should we ban meat that doesn't have all the blood drained out of it?  (In Leviticus 17, a person who eats bloody meat is considered as bad as a murderer and cast out of society!)  Should we ban hybrid cattle?  Mixed fibers in clothing?  Fruit from two year old trees?  Men who shave their sideburns?  These are just some of the prohibitions in the surrounding Leviticus chapters 17-19.

Nobody's mentioned this so far: but pants-shaming girls is the reason for the Republican drive to give private schools public money. Conservatives don't like the fact that the government won't subsidize religious indoctrination, so they use any excuse to create public vouchers to pay for substandard dinosaur-riding educations.

People stupid enough to send their children to schools like this probably don't have the money to do so on their own.
