Prozac and its effects during start up

Recommended Posts

Hi, I've noticed that some people have suggested taking Prozac to help ween oneself off of such meds as Effexor.  So my question is:  Is the start up syndrome with Prozac (the side effects and nausea and headaches n' such) less harsh -if harsh at all - than most other SSRI's?  I would think that since somone would already feel worse trying to ween themselves off effexor, that they would not want to feel even more worse by staring up another AD and to add all the bad feelings assoicated with start up effects of a new AD.

I thought you were supposed to feel bad for days when you first take a new AD. Doesn't Prozac do this?

The theory is that SRIs are so similar in their mechanism of action that people develop cross tolerance to adverse effects. I don't know whether there's any evidence that it's true, but personally I've found it much easier to switch from one SRI to another than to start or stop a SRI by itself.

Not necessarily. The start up effects can be mild or nonexistant. Except that those folks usually don't post about having no ill effects. The typical start up effects for SSRIs such as nausea, sedation, anxiety and insomnia don't affect the majority of people. Most people do not get all of these. Many people who do get some of these are so minimally affected that it's no more irritating than a hangnail.

just my .02:

i'm currently weaning off zoloft w/ prozac.

i am EXTREMELY sensitive, but just so ya know, i've taken the prozac for 3 days and it's causing fatigue, nausea and a headache.

it's not unbearable, but it's also not ideal.

Since it can take prozac somthing like six weeks to reach a steady state, there shouldn't be much by way of startup side effects.

That said, it made me extremely depersonalized for a couple weeks, a side effect that is apperently unheard of.  I never had it with any of the other SSRIs either.

In theory, prozac should have the fewest startup SEs, anyway.

I had no side effects when I started Prozac in 1998. I have had two nasty episodes of acute anxiety on going off of Prozac, unsupervised, however.

I think you will find that you are going to hear a wide variety of experiences with a single SSRI. For example, I tried Paxil for two days prior to the Prozac and had bad side effects (involuntary facial movements, lack of motor coordination). I'm sure that you'll find others on this board have experienced the reverse or no side effects at all on taking Paxil and/or Prozac.
