Wellbutrin XL weight gain

Recommended Posts

Well, I know from my mom that Wellbutrin causes constipation as a relatively common side effect, so there's no doubt it messes with digestive tracts. If I were you, I'd cut down on wheat and salt for a while and see if it's just 'puffy' weight that can be decreased by diet since you mentioned bloating. I know what you mean, though. I was on Risperdal when I was a teenager and gained thirty pounds (common), but after I graduated high school and switched to new anti psychs (which also usually pack on pounds if anything), it was like I couldn't keep weight on. I've been off all anti psychs for a couple months now and I'm still having trouble gaining. A lot of meds of all kinds mess with insulin. You might check if Wellbutrin messes with blood sugar/insulin levels. That can  definitely affect how your body reacts as far as weight gain/loss.

I have found Wellbutrin to be weight-neutral and I don't notice any side effects from it.  (I've been on it for 6-7-8 years---can't remember when I started).

Rather than putting weight on people, Wellbutrin is usually not prescribed to people with eating disorders because some people lose weight on it.  I would make sure it's not a change in your diet, or a hormonal issue, and give it some more time.  It really is an effective antidepressant and most people say the side effects early on will go away.

Good luck with it and I hope it works for you.

I haven't had any weight gain issues with swellbutrin.

I was on it in combination with slurroquel, which was obnoxious for weight gain.

I've lost 30# over the last 4 years, and have been back on swellbutrin since September 2013, still been losing weight on it... probably because it works to keep me from being a sloth on the couch from seasonal affective crap.

I have lost a lot of weight on Wellbutrin.  It has been great for me that way.

However, I have sometimes had it happen that when I restarted or raised the dose, I would become very "busy" and keep switching activities and would go into the kitchen and eat very often.  It felt like being hungry, but I think I was just hungry for the activity of eating, if that makes any sense.  After a couple of weeks I calmed down and ate normally again.

I agree with upset.the.world that it may help to cut down on wheat and bread-like things.  That makes a big difference for me.
