Chimako
Police Confront Rising Number of Mentally Ill Suspects I thought this was a very interesting article
melissaw72
I couldn't really read all the article (can't concentrate well atm) but I have had problems with police ... I called because I thought someone had broken into my apt (my door was open in the AM When I woke up). So anyway the police came, looked around (and I mean stood in one place and "looked around"), and said they didn't see anything missing (how the fuck would they know this? they'd never been in my apt before, and they didn't even ask me any questions like, "do you see anything missing" or whatever). So they called the paramedics and somehow my mother was called, because she showed up out of nowhere, and I was carted off to the psych unit at the hospital for 3 days. Fuckin police. I mean I have respect in general for them, but when they fuck me over like this I tend to question their motives.
Chimako
Yeah the article didn't mention that kind of bullshit. The article mentions that some places are getting MH advocates to go with officers when there's a problem that may be related to MI. The article didn't really say if it was working or not to help keep mentally challenged people the help they need instead of jail. In a perfect world that would mean that even if the officers are jackasses, there's always someone there who isn't. Anyway, it's a tiny step forward. You're right, that is a step forward. It would be great if that happened everywhere, like if it was a standard of practice or something.
lavender fairy
In my city, there are police who have training in dealing with mental health issues. you can request that they send an officer with that training when you make a call. It's not the same as having a trained MH worker working with the police, but it's a step.
