Primary Care DR retiring

I just found out this morning BY ACCIDENT that my primary care DR is retiring in 2 months!  WTF???

And I just happened to find out because I called to make an appt for a physical for this October.  Last October he had planned on seeing me this October.

He is 68 and I get that he wants to retire, whatever, but WTH ... at least send out a letter or something before you retire!

So I just changed my primary DR this morning instead of waiting until June.  What a PITA this will be.  Former PCP knew me really well and he would prescribe over the phone or email.  Now I'm going to have to go in for every little fucking thing until he trusts me.  CRAP!  And who knows if he will fit me in like my former PCP did?  All I used to need to do is say when I could come in and he'd accommodate. I just thought of that.

And at the moment, the new PCP has no Wednesday and Thursday hours ... the 2 days of the week I concentrate my appts on because my mom is busy the other days (usually).  So FUCK.  Hopefully that will change though soon; there is a small possibility it might.

I just got off the phone with all my DR's offices, letting them know of the DR change.  I am just so irritated.

I guess part of me knew retirement would eventually happen, just not this suddenly and not found out by accident.

Ugh, ugh, ugh.  I noticed in one of your posts that you live in a neighboring state--I'm in RI.  I don't know if you happen to be in the Providence vicinity, but my PCP is great and will do refills over the phone.  I'm happy to give you his name in case that's convenient for you.  :)

Thanks :)  I appreciate it.  I live in the Boston suburbs, so I'm not real close to Providence.  Plus I need to have DRs in MA for my health insurance, as well as close to the hospital I go to.

I think the one I chose will be ok, based on others' reactions when I called to tell them I had changed DRs.  All the people I spoke with really sounded happy that I'd chosen the one I did.  All I can do now is hope for the best I guess.

I'm sorry to hear this Melissa - what a huge frustration.  I hope that since you had such a longstanding relationship with him, the retiring doc will have kept really good notes in your file for the new guy to reference.  That would go a long way toward making the transition easier.

Me too.  I really hope he did keep good notes.  It is a computerized system there, so everything he wrote, all labs, etc are in my computer file, that all DRs in the building have access to.

Oh, I would be SO upset if this happened to me.  My GP and my gynecologist are both in their 60s, so I know it's only a matter of time before they retire.

I'm glad you found another one and I hope it is a good fit for you.

olga
