zyprexa seems to slow down my metabolism. I am starting to work out.. so i will see if i can loose weight on it. If i can't i will discontinue the med if that happens. When i told my doctor to put me on it..... he warned me of the weight gain. I hope that working out will control it like my doctor said. He also told me to avoid carbs, but it's hard to do that on an american diet.

The doctor who prescribed it to me told me at 2.5mg/day I wouldn't gain weight. That turned out to be true, I didn't start gaining until he raised it to 5mg, but then I gained like crazy. So yeah, maybe it's dose dependent, but there's a low threshold at which it starts to have that effect. I'm not sure what condition 2.5mg would be helpful for...

yea i don't think weight gain is really a side effect i am having truly. Before i wouldn't eat, so i feel i have a normal eating habit (where i actually eat) and someone who actually eats needs to work out. So once i get into an exercise regimen i can see if the medicine is affecting my metabolism. I do not get munchies on it. I really love this med. So, be a shame if i had to change meds.

I haven't experienced any weight gain yet but I've only been on it for a week, but the urge to eat is worse than nicotine cravings ....I figure if I can resist the urge I should be right.

Although my doc is now thinking of changing to Risperdal.

I've gained a small amount (9-10lbs) on Zyprexa, but I'd rapidly lost 15lbs due to stress right before starting so I'm not sure the weight gain can even be related to the drug (usually if I lose weight rapidly without trying, I gain it back as soon as I feel better). I started exercising and eating a bit better just to make sure I don't gain too much anyway. I don't get food cravings or massive hunger or anything like that, and I've been at 5mgs, 10mgs, and 15mgs, all with the same lack of excessive hunger.

as a disclaimer, i tend to be over thin, so maybe anomalous in that respect, but i've not gained weight apart from maybe five ish pounds and that's healthy for me.

i've been prescribed between ten and thirty milligrams in combination with other things for a few years now.

it's conceivable that something else i'm taking counters the weight gain in me personally, but i'm not taking anything to intentionally do so.

i've been a runner since i was quite young and i also have some hang ups about a lot of foods that tend to be higher in calories, so those things may also play a role.

i hope you find a solution  x

oh, one other thing, though i can't speak to it personally, but depakote can cause weight gain for some people. i have a friend who put on a fair bit of weight from it, but stays on it because it's great for him otherwise. just something to consider in identifying the source of the weight gain.

When I took Zyprexa daily [10mg], I steadily gained weight. It wasn't a lot of weight numerically [~17 pounds], but due to my small frame, it was enough to almost require me to buy a new wardrobe. Going to 5mg Zyprexa didn't help matters. The only way I stopped gaining weight was taking it as PRN, which I found pretty effective.

I think whether someone can take Zyprexa PRN depends on their symptomology. I tended towards being asymptomatic most of the time, and these past two or so years I've been pretty much okay.

I was on 20mg of zyprexa for a long long time. Years. It was my miracle med.

I got off it after gaining nearly 100 lbs. I still wish to take it though.

I switched to seroquel but found myself gaining weight but not as much or as quickly.

I am now being switched to geodon. Along with my abilify.

I hope you find an answer that helps you the most. I tried metformin too and it didn't work at all. Ugh
