Prozac...anyone? Anyone?

Recommended Posts

Is anyone on the ol' standbye? I've been on it for a couple of weeks (coming off Brintellix) and don't feel a difference. I know that it's one that can really take up to 8 weeks to notice, though.

I haven't noticed any side effects...did anyone else have any? I'm on a low dose (20mg).

I'm on it and it is a lifesaver for me.  When I'm not on it I am really weepy.  In the Spring it goes to 40 mg (down from 80 mg), and back up to the 80 mg in the Fall.  But no other noticeable side effects.

Hi, Bethy.

I suppose you should probably give it 8 weeks before making any decisions. But, I'd be asking, too, I'm sure.

I've taken Prozac for four years, and it is effective. Started at 20g per day, around 2 years ago I went to 40g per day. Any more than that and all I experience is side effects. These include feeling tired enough to sleep for several hours after taking the overdose, and odd feelings which I find hard to describe, but they are unpleasant. Some days, Prozac seems to do the trick, and other days, like when I am stressed out, I tend to think Prozac is not doing it for me. But, in a 30-day time period I would have to say that the med does do what it's supposed to do. I have done Zoloft and Effexor in the past but tended to abuse them because taking more seemed to produce euphoria in me. Prozac doesn't, just makes me feel uncomfortable, so I'm happy with it.

Been on it twice, it worked a while.  While it worked it was good stuff.  It does take some time to kick in though.  Initially it made me sleepy and my appetite dropped.

I had sexual side effects (couldn't get an erection, basically) and eventually became manic even with an AAP, if I remember correctly.

eta: I was on 40mg.

I was on 20mg prozac for a while, until I switched to it's chemically similar, but different in ways, Luvox at a high dose for anxiety.

Prozac can take ages to kick in. All SSRI's or SNRI's have a tendency to do this. Give it some more time, and keep in touch with your doctors. I recommend using a mood tracker, paper or something like patientslikeme.com

I even coded a mood charter on my site Wobbly Psyche It's still in beta mode, but it's simple to use. I haven't updated it in a while, but there will be some more detailed charts. It's simple and you can chart as often or as little as you want.

But stay strong, give the Prozac its time, and hopefully it works. Your pdoc may up the dose, because 20 is fairly low. I can't tell you that, I'm not a pdoc or gdoc, it's just my opinion. Take it with a grain of salt. At 20mg I didn't notice any side effects, sexual included.

I'm wishing you the best.

I've been on it before, about 10 years ago, and it worked pretty quickly for me. My husband is on it now and he and I both noticed a major difference after a couple of weeks. No side effects, either.

I was on 20mg prozac and it was at least a month before I felt any difference and even then I was still symptomatic so my pdoc increased it to 40mg and a few weeks later I was feeling well.

It takes a while to feel any improvement

Thanks everyone. As you can see in my signature, I've been through the wringer with meds. I'm really hoping this one works for now.

I really hope so too. I'm rooting for you!

I was on it a while ago and it was not a good drug for me. I don't know which was worse: the complete and total numbness or the inorgasmia and rock-bottom sex drive. Then when they bumped me up to 40 mg, I broke out into full-body hives and that was the end of that. Well, not quite actually. Haha. 'Cause Prozac has the longest half-life of all the SSRI's, so it took about a month to go back to normal.

Anyway, not trying to discourage you. I hope it works awesome for you.
