Prozac - nausea after eating/drinking a certain amount

Recommended Posts

I started prozac on Saturday, only 10mg at the moment. After the initial 'sick' feeling and vomiting, I'm now left with nausea after I eat a certain amount or drink a certain amount of liquids. Like right now, I drank 20oz of water (normal for me to drink that much in a short time) and I feel like throwing up. I can't eat more more than a certain amount (small serving) without wanting to throw up.

I don't think it's the lithium since it's more present after my AM dose of prozac and throughout the day and I take the lithium before bed.

Ugh... meds.

Try drinking some liquids that are more settllng on your stomach, like Gingerale, or Gatorade. When I drink water, it has to be iced freezing cold, or it's just ick. Even try flat Coke (not Pepsi, ew), cold, or milk. That might help settle your stomach.

This is likely temporary since you just started the Prozac. Eat what you can, eat smaller meals more often, and keep it simple, until the nausea goes away. It shouldn't last forever. Keep yourself hydrated, it doesn't have to be just water. You can drink light pop's, like gingerale, Sprite, 7-up and whatnot, and rehydrating beverages like Gatorade. Stay away from caffeine and diet beverages. Fruit juices (except for grapefruit juice) can help, but try to get lower sugar, but not fake sugar.

It should go away after a little while, though. A lot of meds cause nausea on start-up, especially in combo with lithium, which can be hard on the stomach. If you find it doesn't go away, talk to your doctor. Lithium can come in extended release formula, which many find is less harsh, and there are more SSRI's than just prozac. Good luck!
