Hello anxiety, my old friend...

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am going through my 4th major depression (pdoc calls it MDD-moderate) along with some nasty anxiety.  I'm 47.  I have had some very good periods in my life, but then inevitably some major stress hits me, my anxiety goes through the roof and eats away at me until it sneakily devolves into MDD.

Right now I am dealing with three major life stressors...I'm a single working parent of two demanding kids, dealing with an aging mother with dementia all on my own, and am the victim of some criminal harassment that is beyond scary.  In other words, I have plenty reason to be anxious!  I know though that if I were doing better under the hood, I'd be coping with all this crap better.  Right now I feel like I am walking through mud most days, and if I can get the basics dealt with (food, clothing, shelter, work, kids) then I am doing pretty well.  But there's no joy in anything, and everything is tiring, like walking through mud.

Anyhow, I was on a waitlist to see a psychiatrist for quite awhile and I just got in last week.  Total switch up of my meds, from Lexapro with Strattera and the odd 1 mg Ativan, to Effexor XR and Seroquel.  She said that the Effexor is for the depression and the Seroquel for anxiety and sleep.  Only on day 5 of the new mix so far and I'm not feeling any better, but not any worse either.  She said it would take a couple of weeks, so I am holding onto that for now...

Nice to meet you all, I look forward to reading more.

Welcome to CB! Anxiety is horrible, and I can relate to the feeling of walking through mud. It takes up to six weeks or more for antidepressants to work, but Seroquel should work for you sooner. You'll find plenty of company here and should also find plenty of support. I'm glad you found us and look forward to your posts!
