Coming off Effexor

Recommended Posts

So I only got up to 75 mg of Effexor XR and backed down to 37.5 about 2 months ago. Effexor just wasn't working for me so I'm going back to Paxil. I've been back on Paxil for a few months, only taking 20 mg at the moment but plan on going up. I had some situational life things going on and couldn't deal with backing further off Effexor for a while. Spoke to my Pdoc the other day and I'm going to try and get off the Effexor totally now but am a little hesitant to start. Effexor was always tough for a day or two when I started it and upped the dose. Honestly, I can't remember if backing down to 37.5 was a problem or not, which makes me think maybe it wasn't terrible.

Regardless, my doc wants me to take a 37.5 every other day for a few weeks, probably going up to 30 of Paxil once I get used to that dosage of Effexor. Then going to every third day with Effexor before stopping it.

So my question is has anyone taken this course in getting off the last dosage of Effexor? I only started it in January and like I said never got up to a very high dose.I hope that makes things smooth but I'm still not looking forward to that first day of no Effexor. Any tips or comments are much appreciated. Thanks

I had a bad response to Effexor and was crosstapered off of the BADWRONG PILLS waaay faster than that.

I'm wanting to say the doc did it in 5 days, though this was back in 2009, so my memory might be incorrect.

Mind you, I was (a) on the starting dose of 37.5 mg, and (b) was pretty close to needing to be locked up for my own safety,

Effexor takes a long time to get out of your system as far as symptoms go. I had to go off of Effexor twice. One time was miserable as hell and the 2nd time I was given an antidepressant to take its place immediately so I didn't get a sudden serotonin crash. Talk to your doctor about what options he/she has in mind to help you transition out of the Effexor. Maybe Paxil is affecting different levels of brain chemicals and it's just not enough of a change to keep from feeling the loss of Effexor in your blood stream.

Oh the brain jolts and involuntary eye jerks were just awful. I'll never go back on Effexor because of it.
