Planking
After taking thorazine for a couple of months, is it possible for dopamine to permanently leave the synaptic cleft? I am nervous because I have read the Wikipedia entry and it states since it blocks all dopamine receptors there is a starting overload of dopamine when it has no where to go and eventually it just disappears but it makes no mention of recovery after discontinuing use. Another website states that typical aps do permanently block these receptors but other than that I have found no mention of this on the internet. I need that dopamine, it's what makes life enjoyable. Any input? I can dig up the links if you want.
Stickler
Eventually the blocked receptors regenerate, from what I remember reading...
mellifluous
I don't know, but I've taken more than a few months of Thorazine in my lifetime and lots of typical antipsychotics--injections of all sorts and capsules and tablets and I don't have zero dopamine, I'm pretty sure, so I mean I the risk of not taking effective medication can definitely outweigh the risks of trying education that might be effective for a few months and I'm not going to say that I have no side effects, but I do think zero dopamine sounds really rare. It's a choice you should be informed when making I think so I'm just posting as a person whose experience is counter to whatever you've read. What does your psychiatrist say about it? Planking
In not on meds anymore as they just said it was a substance abuse, I don't have a diagnosed disorder. I just know that since taking the meds I'm forgetful, not as energetic and don't have feelings of being in certain places anymore like cozy in bedroom, studious in classroom, comfortable in living room etc if that makes sense. Also the Thorazine made me feel like I was in another world and nothing was real and since coming off I'm starting to get the feelings back that I'm not just a spectator and am actually thinking and feeling for myself. That stuff is nasty gained a lot of weight and completely ruined my metabolism which still isn't straight yet. I also had feelings of self harm on it and would hit myself and pike myself with no emotion and no pain registering. I wasn't depressed or anything I was a robot and had a feeling of being abused when being talked to, I also started chain smoking cigars heavily because I had nothing to do all day long, not literally but on the meds I wasn't smart enough to think of anything to fill my day so I smoked from 7 till 12 am to pm for 3 months. Now I'm off them I switched to cigarettes with only one a day or so with coffee from dnd and I feel like a productive citizen going about tasks. MiaB
In not on meds anymore as they just said it was a substance abuse, I don't have a diagnosed disorder. I'm confused. You were on thorazine for substance abuse and have no other diagnoses?
mellifluous
Like mia, I'm a bit confused except I read you as saying that taking the meds (Thorazine) they decided was substance abuse? Or did you mean the thing that caused you to be put on meds they later deemed "substance abuse" and took you off meds? At any rate, yes, I do know those feelings if how the world doesn't fit and they're complex for me. Sarcosine helps and I tend to feel them most after I've been badly untreatedly psychotic for some time, hospitalized , released and then trying to figure out how to reorient myself in what's left of my life. B vitamin injections can help some as well but it mostly just sucks. I don't know how the substance abuse thing fits in but I can smoke a fair amount of cigarettes trying to sort my head and reconnect to the world, but don't have substance abuse apart from that. It sounds like Thorazine didn't work well for you, and no, it didn't have those effects on me. Since you're off it now and, as you say, feeling productive, I guess it's good you're off and if you have a psychiatrist or general practitioner then maybe ask about what a/he thinks regarding long term effects. I've been fortunate not to have them from Thorazine. Good luck! Edited May 27, 2014 by mellifluous
Planking
I was put on it for nervous breakdown and they deemed later it wasn't a disorder just a one time thing so I was taken off. All I know is these Aps put me in a fantasy land, I don't think they r for me.
