So I'm reading the sunday paper, and I flip the page, and there big as day are the words "Bipolar Disorder".  On a entire page.  The advertisement was for Abilify.  I was surprised to say the least.  It's not every day you see a full page newspaper ad for the treatment of BP, after all.

Anyone else notice the ad in their newspaper?

You know, there is something about me and the drug ads:

In April, I saw a man in a fast food joint doing his crossword with a Zyprexa pen.  Paranoia!  He's noticing how I'm acting!  Within a week, I ended up on Zyprexa.

In October, a friend called to say "Have you seen those giant Abilify ads?"  So far, I'm liking the Abilify.

I saw a ten-year-old journal ad this weekend, singing the praises of Depakote, just after its FDA approval for mania.  That was weird.  Yes, there was a big cartoon roller coaster.

I think it is kinda weird- I've seen a lot of print ad and TV commercials for various psych drugs. Especially Wellbutrin- that commercial has these wealthy, popular looking people at some kind of night time party by the pool- DRINKING ALCOHOL- and it is just an ad telling people maybe Wellbutrin is right for them. Well, I'd love to have the disease that Wellbutrin treats so I can take the crap and be rich and cool! So depression is cool!

They have ads for Viagra. Impotence is cool too! You can get closer to your honey!

I wish BP was cool!

BP is the coolest!

Seriously.

Do you realize how many bands how the word "bipolar' in the album names or song titles?

BP is the disorder of artists. BP is the place to be.

Abilify, though? Doesn't that shit just make you more manic? They're really pushing everything for everything these days. Like drug dealers who won't leave you alone on the street, only legal about the whole thing.

Doesn't make me more manic.  Knocks out my hypomania with a sledgehammer, and me in the process.  I suppose it all depends on your brain chemistry in the first place.

I get uncomfortable about medication advertising and pharmaceutical respresentatives.  Also, samples are sort of weird, but I can't argue with not having to pay for a drug that I don't know will work.

I take 15 mg of abilify (along w/150 of lamictal) and think its great.

I doesn't 'activate' me at all, it just thoroughly quells my raging bp temper.

Its kind of scary that its labeled as an anti-psychotic, although I guess labels are inconsequential as long as it works.

I agree that abilify along with lamictal are getting a lot of press lately. I think what is more creepy is when the drug co.s foist pills on doctors in the hope that they will start doling out free samples. But Geekstreak is right in saying that it sure beats paying for it when you are rolling the pharmaceutical dice trying to find an appropriate med.

I agree.  What completely weirds me out is when the print media is saturated with advertisements for a particular drug, be it a new anti-cholesterol med or, as I'm seeing right now, Abilify.  We are talking major bucks here to tap into what is not, in the great scheme of things, a huge market.

If you compare the number of people who have BP, say, to the potential number of people who would take an anti-cholesterol med, that's quite a wide gap.  Yet the makers of Abilify are putting on a similar campaign as the makers of say, Vytorin (the latest and greatest new anti-cholesterol drug, with ads out everywhere).

I'm not anti-Abilify or anything, I just find it interesting.  I read alot of magazines, and I've seen full page ads not only in my local newspaper, but in USA Today, Time, that US Today sunday newspaper insert, and some other magazines which I can't remember.

Makes you think.
