Idiot
Hi, I finally joined these boards after realizing every time I googled a drug I always got the best info here & surprisingly not other sites that list the exact same information as each other. It's nice to see people talking about actual effects and such of a drug instead of learning the dangers of a med to elderly patients with dementia. I'm 38, female & have been on disability since 2008ish when I finally just went nuts. I guess I'm bipolar? Even after all this time I still don't know anything- I'm a pretty passive patient & don't know the whole diagnostic process (or if they just make it up anyway). I am useless at talking to my pdoc and also have absolutely no idea what talk therapy is supposed to do (do u all even talk about that here or just meds & MDs?). So, kind of just generally hoping to get some examples and practice talking about private things that would be relevant to pdocs, get u all's info on meds, & maybe get some questions answered. Thanks!

WinterRosie
Hi! What do you imagine might happen if you went up to your doc and asked "what am I diagnosed with? I'd like to read up on it." Or, if that is too hard, what if you emailed them that, or left it as a voicemail? We do advocate being active participants in our care, here. After all, we're the ones who have to put up with it! Idiot
Thanks for the replies- it's really nice that you do that & it's already made me more comfortable on the site. I will be taking the advice from both of you- 1) exploring the whole site and 2) trying to ask my pdoc what should be the most simple question (maybe I should get his email...) Thanks again for saying hi
olga
It think it's also good to write down questions in advance. I often have 4 or 5 questions for a doctor, and I forget them---so I've learned to go in with a written list. I sometimes write down the answers if I think I might get mixed up when I'm getting a lot of information from the doctor. Welcome! olga
WinterRosie
Oh! The other thing that I do is bring my significant other with me to act as an advocate. I am a wreck when it comes to physical health (I'm much more independent when it comes to MI) so I need him to go with me to make sure that someone knows what's going on.
