Urine Retention with SSRIs/SNRIs

Recommended Posts

It seems that i can't be on any medication that affects serotonin because each one i've tried has the side effect of urinary retention.  It took me like five minutes just to be able to urinate.  Prozac, Zoloft, Effexor all did it.  The pdoc said it's likely that side effect would happen in any SSRI/SNRI, so that's why i didn't try too many.  i was only on them for maybe five days before i knew it was doing it again and got off it.

It really sucks because they did help with the anxiety a little, but i can't be on them.  i wouldn't want to go on some urinary medication just so i might be able to take them either.

My question is has anyone had this or know someone who's had this situation?  i'm sure that i've had some type of urinary issue all my life, but it's minor and i've learned to deal with it.  i think i went to the doctor for it once as a child, but they didn't find anything wrong.  And now that i can actually articulate the problem, i'm too embarrassed to go.  As far as i've researched online, there isn't much you can do for the kind of problem i have any.

So has anyone heard of this?

Yes, I have had  urinary retention on Effexor (SNRI). Some meds just have this side effect. If you already have a problem, it makes sense that certain ADs could aggravate this.

I've recently had this problem as well, though I think the culprit in my case is Geodon (an AAP). I didn't have the issue on any ADs, even amitriptyline which is supposedly bad for it.
