tryp
I did manage to lose some weight on Seroquel after seeing a dietitian and following a very clear meal plan, which still allowed me to eat enough, but definitely required a lot of planning and self-control. Exercising is also a big help. Have you spoken to your psychiatrist about your diabetes?
bpladybug
I was able to lose 30 lbs on Seroquel which put my glucose level back to normal and allowed me to cut my blood pressure med in half I followed Weight Watchers, attended meetings, tracked, learned new foods and recipes and walked. I really needed the structure of WW. I have maintained the weight loss. edit: oh yes, Woo named Metformin I am also taking Metformin and it helps with the evening food cravings Edited June 9, 2014 by bpladybug
Wooster
All the research I did indicated two effective inteventions for weightloss while on atypical antipsychotics: -logging your food (leading to portion control) -metformin -or both in combination. If you live in a town with a YMCA you might ask if they have a diabetes prevention program you could participate in. They often do "income based" feeds for programs, so if you don't have a lot of money they can give pretty deep discounts. Does your doctor's office have a nutritionist? That's another way to get (usually free) help with meal plans. LB found weight watchers to be a good program for her. I've been doing it on my own and having moderate success. I'm down a total of about 30 lbs of the 40 that I gained on slurroquel.
Velvet Elvis
If you're diabetic, you should absolutely not drink a drop on seroquel.
rowan77
Seroquel worked wonders for me but I gained weight and had raised cholesterol and blood sugar levels, so my pdoc decided it was adversely affecting my physical health and it would be better not taking it. Yes I did lose weight, my cholesterol and blood sugar levels decreased. I was slowly weaned off Seroquel onto Abilify which did not cause me to gain weight, but didn't really help me either. I became very manic. Pdoc decided I should go back on Seroquel as it is the AAP that works best for me. Because I was very much aware of potential side effects I was pro-active in eating well and exercising and have actually managed to lose weight, albeit very slowly. I always felt that by taking Seroquel (and other meds causing weight like zyprexa) I was doomed to be fat forever, never be able to lose weight, but it CAN be done. My feeling is that you can lose weight on Seroquel, it just requires a lot more effort. It has taken me 2 years to lose 32 lbs, but I'm getting there!. Wonderful.Cheese
Good work Rowan! I'm happy that you are losing Weight on seroquel. Even if it is slowly it's way better than gaining! I am taking seroquel. I have gained weight. But not as much as zyprexa.
KillBytes
I am amazed, if any one told me it was possible to lose weight on seriquel prior to reading this thread I would have thought they were joking. I love seriquel, works the best for me, but I was gaining too much weight and had to stop. It's a pity as it worked the best for me all around. Hoosier_Student
It's possible to lose weight on seroquel, but it takes dedication. You need to make sure you work out regularly and count your calories (e.g. eat a lot of veggies and avoid those carbs)!
Nataliecat
I lost a stone on Seroquel but it was hard as it seemed to make me crave huge portions of carbs! It is possible to lose weight, but I had to keep a food diary, as I was scoffing a lot more than I thought I was! -)
dianthus
Not Seroquel, but Depakote, which is another notorious gainer. I gained 70 pounds in 6 months on it. I did 3 things to lose it all: Metformin Low-carb diet (but still eat some dairy, beans, small portions of nuts, and berries) Exercise I don't track calories and I'm rarely hungry. If you're diabetic, the carbs are doing you no favors anyway.
