Having a Sleep Study done....

Recommended Posts

I've had trouble with insomnia and unrestful sleep as far back as I can remember.  As a kid I'd have panick attacks when trying to fall asleep because it always took me at least an hour and a half to drift off and I was totally freaked I wouldn't get enough sleep to carry me through the next school day.  These days I'm more calm about it but still wake up AT LEAST once every hour and find it difficult to fall back asleep mainly due to racing thoughts.  Pdoc prescribed me some Lunesta yesterday and wrote me a scrip to have a sleep study done.  Anyone had one before?  What is it like?  How did the results end up helping you?  Also, personal experiences with Lunesta are appreciated...

if you get a *good* sleep study facility they will hook you up right at the time you are to sleep.  you are not allowed to watch tv, or read.  light's out mean sleep.  all the stuff frosty described is true, but if you're not going to be tested for narcolepsy you won't have to stay the extra day.

all and all i think they are pretty much bullshit, cause i can't freaking sleep with all that shit on my face/body.  but i have sleep apnea so i have to have them every couple years or so >>

Yeah, that's what I'm scared of.  I go for an apnea test later this month, and I'm worried about being able to sleep while hooked up to all those wires and shit...

most people should be able to at least reach REM once during a sleep study, which is if I am correct, one of the main things they look at.  it doesn't matter if you get a good night's sleep or an awful night's sleep- as long as you sleep.  for my last study the nurse lady said i didn't really get to sleep until 3 am, and they wake you up at 6 (well, where I was).  just don't drink/eat any caffeine, and hope for the best.  once you fall asleep you won't care about the wires.

also to the OP, the results I got meant I had to get a BiPAP, a machine that helps me breathe while I sleep.  They may or may not try to have you use one (though you would probably have a CPAP, minus the oxygen) depending on your situation.  They seem uncomfortable at first but I really, really love mine.  Great for when I'm feeling tired but shouldn't sleep or when I have a cold or something and can't breathe. ;)
