Wellbutrin for bipolar

Recommended Posts

I am on Abilify and Lamictal and now, a brand new drug to add to the cocktail:  Wellbutrin.  Three days and I am feeling like I have much more energy, you should see how fast I am typing right now it's amazing!  Hypomania?  Or was I just so sluggish before that this is normal?  How do I know?  I don't want to paint walls or buy stuff, but I do want to get up and boogie!

They gave me the Wellbutrin the other day after a really lame attempt at suicide the other day.  I was hesitant to take it but I'm definitely not suicidal now.  I want to go out to dinner, all dressed up and order really good food, a great bottle of wine and just enjoy life.  Of course financial limitations inhibit that good fun, but could the drug actually be acting this fast, and if it is, is that a good thing?

I took Prozac before and it sent me into instant mania.  This doesn't feel quite like that.

Any other bipolars take Wellbutrin?  Experiences?

Hi Waterfall,  I hope you don't mind me replying since I just started wellbutrin

today.  My pdoc told me that it tends to kick in sooner than other ADs and it will

give me the extra energy I am so desperately seeking.  I am afraid to take any

SSRIs since my introduction to mixed states via celexa.  Pdoc did warn me about

the mania risk and adviseed me to stay at the starting dose if I started to get

depression relief.  What dose are you on now?  I am starting at 150 & tirating to

300 if I need to.  I hope others who've been on wellbutrin for a while will chime in

with more info.  It sounds to me like you are just happy the depression is lifting.

Thanks for responding and you are probably right.  I just feel normal again.  I am on 150mg as of now.  Let me know how things go for you.

Wellbutrin can have a fairly noticeable stimulant effect at first.  It mellows out after a while.

I don't have any personal experience with mania so I don't know what it feels like.  If you feel like you've had a few cups of coffee only without the jitters, that's normal. It usually goes away within a week and then comes back to stay only much milder within a month.

I started taking Wellbutrin about 3 weeks ago and I am slowly starting to notice how much more I rapid cycle these days. I've started mood charting and my mood swings go all over the place- I too have had days where I want to go out and party and get all dressed up and I am really hyper & happy...and then later on that day or the next day it swings the opposite way and I'll be catatonic, depressed, apathetic, very "dull."

I am going to talk to my pdoc about this...if you notice this then talk to your pdoc about it too. I have read posts about a handful of people that seemed to rapid cycle much more on WB or it sent them into manic states when they had never experienced it before.

But I hope it continues working well for you!!

I started Wellbutrin about a week ago for inability to concentrate and to help with depression.  First couple of days, didn't really see any difference.  Last couple of days, feels like I am on the BP roller coaster.  Euphoric one day, dsyphoric the next, depressed the day after that, sometimes I get them all in one day.  I am hoping it will settle down because it seems to have helped with my concentration.  Of course, that could just be the hypomania.

So far I'm very irritable, restless and anxious.  Definitely a mixed state.  Why can't they just up the lamictal and stop adding other drugs???  I see pdoc tomorrow night and I will definitely tell him of this horrid experience with the Wellbutrin.
