Titrating from Venlafaxine to Chlomipramine

Recommended Posts

I talked to my pdoc today and he decided to switch me from Venlafaxine to Chlomipramine.  I had previously taken Chlomipramine several years ago and found it very effective until I foolishly decided to go off meds altogether.  On the other hand, I haven't found that Venlafaxine does much for me.  We are doing a four week titration to switch from one to the other.  I'm still a little concerned about going down on Venlafaxine because of the horrible withdrawal symptoms.  Am I worrying too much about the switch?  Has anyone here titrated off Venlafaxine?  Did you experience withdrawal symptoms?

How long have you been on the venlafaxine? I took it for about 3 months, and I didn't have much trouble coming off. I found coming off Paxil to be much worse, but that could be just me.

Going down off it slowly, as you seem to be planning, will help keep the withdrawal symptoms to a minimum. It also helps if you're starting something else, usually another SSRI or SNRI, but who knows, maybe the chlomipramine will help take the edge off.

I took it for a few months. My doctor stepped me from a middle sized dose straight down to nothing so I had a heck of a time coming off it (that being said, I had a heck of a time while I was on it too). It's probably not going to be fun, but if you reduce the dose really slowly it should be bearable.
