What med/s finally resolved your OCD?

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for a new pdoc, the last one was not so good so I am gathering some Ideas before I see him/her.He was a very bad prescriber, so I would not know what med what was helping what/ making what worse. So I would be willing to try basically any med known to man over again.

Some meds I remember helping a bit...

risperdal, clomiprimine, lexapro, citalopram, sertraline, paroxetine CR and to a much lesser extent the clonazepam I am taking PRN now.

I have tried therapy (for everything listed in my signature) in the past with minimal results. So, meds are the way to go, at least for now.

What was the med/med combination that made you stop obsessing about BS all day? Curious!

Meds didn't do spit for my OCD.

Therapy is what has helped me the most, specifically exposure response prevention therapy with someone who has special training in it.

I hope you find better results with a different doc.

My wondermed is sertraline, which I see you've already tried. I would not say my OCD is resolved, though (it is my understanding that it's a lifelong disorder that cannot be resolved, only managed), but it is much better controlled. Me + my sertraline, sitting in a tree.

I know a lot of people around here swear by Luvox for OCD, but I have not tried it, myself.

I have a different form of OCD than you. I am more compulsive (I do rituals.). The only thing that helped my OCD was therapy while taking meds. That got me to a place where I was able to dare to stop the rituals a few times which in the end demonstrated to me that if I did not perform the rituals, nothing bad would happen.

So the answer is therapy while on meds. Meds alone won't take away neither obsessions nor compulsions. Meds only make them weaker so that therapy can do its job. The meds which helped me the most with OCD were the SSRIs. Probably sertraline, but I honestly can't remember.

This forum gives the impression of being so laid back and cool, yet the mods can't say a wordy durd?

:P

Prozac was the first thing that worked for my OCD.  I've been on different meds since then and have been fine.

larali, mods and admins can choose the language they use. for example, woo is well-spoken and every other word out of my mouth is some variation of "motherfucker." it takes all kinds, right?!?! :)

meds have never done shit for my OCD because SSRIs and ADs make me manic before they do much of anything else. Therapy has been the best thing for my OCD.

I noticed my OCD got a lot better after going on the saphris. It calmed my intrusive thoughts a lot. The increase in prozac helped but that came after the saphris. Now I only have minor intrusive thoughts and compulsions.

Edit: I was on zyprexa for 2 weeks and noticed improvement in my OCD, it came back once I went off of it though.

I'm supposed to go to stay at 100mg trazodone , but build up to 30mg of buspar... (still some anxiety)

Pregabalin (Lyrica) helped a fuck load. I was prescribed pregabalin when I was inpatient, but once I left, my new pdoc insisted he took me off them as I was on "too much medication". That doctor didn't know what the hell he was on about, and just read everything from a book and treated me as a textbook case, which I am far from. I transferred pdocs and this one is far better but still thinks pregabalin isn't in my best interest. Kinda pissed about that, but sertraline is doing almost as good of a job.

My pdoc prescribed Abilify for my OCD (I was already on Prozac for depression and anxiety). The Abilify knocked the OCD right out.

This has been my experience as well.

Interesting how experiences differ. Abilify amps up my anxiety and hence aggravates my OCD.

But I will take a few OCD tendencies over killer depression any day.

ETA: I should add that my OCD now is basically OCD tendencies since I pretty much have conquered it. It just rears its ugly head when I get anxious and is not debilitating as it was before.

I currently take 100mg Luvox for OCD. I started with 50mg but didn't help.

I notice a moderate improvement of OCD with Luvox.

PS ... thanks for everybody's replies! I keep a list of med ideas to bring to the pdoc, therapy is still not helping. They don't understand the Aspie stuff, but thankfully the pdoc is a specialist at it (he does VERY LIGHT therapy).

I would love to try Luvox, but those drug interactions worry me (Irony). Increased blood levels of benzos and caffeine (necessary evil these days) might make the OCD worse. Only 2 meds would be great. Exercise is helping the dysthymia/anhedonia.

Risperdal helped me tremendously, really cleared my head. After being on it several years, pdoc decided it was time to quit, my prolactin level was too high. It's been a few weeks, and I've noticed that I'm ticking off syllables with my fingers again. Fuck.

I take 250mg of Luvox. I asked my pdoc to increase the dosage and he did.

I felt very tired and was sleeping a lot but that side effect decreased.

Luvox helps 80% with my OCD. It also strangely affects appetite. I lost almost 10 lbs already since 2 months ago.
