Hello, everyone. I've been lurking around the chat for a few weeks now and I think it's finally time I introduce myself.

My nick is Jagged. I'm twenty four years old and I currently live in Brazil, though I grew up in the United States and have lived there as an adult for a few years. I've worked as a barista, a busboy, a buffet line worker, a waiter, a cashier, cashier supersvisor, sub-manager and have been a minor partner in a restaurant business in the past. My current hobbies are sports, pole dancing, online gaming, going to the movies and practicing spiritual stuff like meditation and astral travel. I am also non-religious.

I've never been formally diagnosed since I couldn't express what was happening to me as I understood nothing about mental illness at the time. I've had a couple of psychotic episodes in my life but thankfully I'm not the violent or angry type. From what I've read I have Bipolar Disorder Type 1 because I've had both manic episodes coupled with psychosis followed by a very brief period of depression.

I haven't been compliant with medication ever since my first breakdown because I prefer to manage my symptoms with a wholesome lifestyle than to deal with the side effects of anti-psychotics, and have only taken them long enough to leave my state of delusion. I understand that this is inadvisable for the vast majority of people with a mental illness so I don't recommend it to others, but it has worked out well for me so far so long as I take care of myself and stay away from drugs, alcohol, stress, lack of exercise and not sleeping properly.

Being a part of this community has helped me feel a lot more at ease with my disorder and reduced my own stigma with mental illnesses. I now see it more as a treatable condition that I can adjust to through self-education than an embarrassing skeleton that I hoped even more people wouldn't find out about. Thanks for welcoming me into the boards and I hope to continue making friends here.

Cheers!

Hello and Welcome!

I understand the desire to stay away from medications, but please be aware that this is a pro-treatment site.  We encourage people to see therapists and psychiatrists and remain compliant on medication.

Please don't hesitate to contact a staff person if you have any questions or concerns.
