Taking Klonopin @ night for sleep, but am I uncovering underlying depression?

Recommended Posts

I was prescribed Klonopin for my prolonged anxiety/insomnia and it is working wonders for those issues.

My concern is, now that I have lessened anxiety, I seem to be depressed more often or have just unearthed long term underlying depression.

I am unsure what to do because I would rather deal with the depression than not sleep!

Any thoughts?

I'm fine with benzos, at the right dosage that is. I don't like feeling sedated or slowed down. I prefer benzos to work like asprins for me. I don't want to feel them but expect them to do their magic. Definitely talk to your doctor. I also take wellbutrin for depression, love it. Best damn AD I ever had and I had them all :)

Best of luck to you!

Me too.  I find that now that I've been on benzos for about 13 years, they do their magic without me feeling sedated (on the right dose for me).

Hey thanks for the supportive responses! I am not ready to chuck the Klonopin just yet since it is doing it's job. I take .5mg at night for sleep, which works %98 of the time and .25mg-.5mg during the day PRN, which is pretty rare. I am currently on 50 mg of Zoloft, along with a host of other meds for various things. I am also currently in therapy every other week.

I was initially prescribed Klonopin near the end of last October, 2013, with the understanding that I wouldn't be on it forever. I began to self-taper in December of 2013 and was off completely in mid February. I went back on in April and doctor suggested I stick with it for sleep since it is a small dose and had no issues. ( I must note that I was trying to leave a stressful work situation and struggling with the pressures of losing income)

I generally start to slide into a funk mid August until about the end of September, so this is not unusual for me. I did ask to try wellbutrin since I have attention/concentration issues and have had them all my life, but doc was concerned that would make my anxiety worse.

Again, thanks for the support and I will be sure to discuss this with doctor ASAP.

Yes people do report more anxiety from Wellbutrin. I got started on it from a General Practioner and was on it for a year. So my pdocs just let me continue with it. For me, at 150mg MAX per day. I can honestly say I do not feel any more anxiety from that small dosage. But I also take seroquel too. It counters the fatigue a little bit. When i do fall in a serious bout with depression, I need an additional AD like Zolft. Wellbutrin alone FOR ME will not help major depression.

I love reading other people's experiences here! Not too many people I can talk to about any of this any where else! :)

Maybe you can try the Wellbutrin SR or the other long-acting one (my mind is totally blank atm as to whether it is XL or ER).  It is released into your body more slowly over the day, so the anxiety might not be affected like it would be with the immediate reacting Wellbutrin.  Not saying that you won't get more anxiety, just it might not aggravate it as much, and be more tolerable.

Thanks to Melissa and KillBytes as well.

You have given me some good insight on this med and I am pretty confident that doc will take a wait and see approach with the depression. It seems to be pretty manageable at this point and I will let hubby and doc both know what is going on.

I always feel so fortunate for the kindness and understanding shown to me here.

Thanks again!
