keli51
Has anyone have RLS or pain in legs from taking prozac? I am relatively new here. I started taking prozac 2 weeks ago and while I love it, I can't seem to shake this pain in my legs it's constant. I have a herniated disk in my lower back and have meds for that as well but I can't seem to stop thinking this pain is associated with the prozac. Anyways any help would be greatly appreciated! chimpmaster
Hi Kel, It doesnt sound like you have sufferred from an allergic reaction (which is good of course) in which case we are really looking at the suitability of the drug for you. A lot of it depends on how much you can tolerate. To be honest you need to give an ssri about a month to start really working hard and for the jittery side effects to pass completely. Mind you from my experience these jittery side effects can be exhilerating as well as frightening, at different times. It is common to be prescribed a drug like xanax to get you through the rough jittery period. Of course you dont want to develop a habit, but a couple of weeks usage every day or every other day should be fairly easy to withdraw from. Now I am saying all this with your dr's advice in mind - make sure you follow it or make educated decisions at least. Changing to another med is certainly an option, and you may get less side effects if you do it, but you can still expect a rough period over the first 2 weeks. FYI the choice of drugs for most people in the US (from the same group as prozac) are zoloft, paxil, celexa and lexapro (a new refined version of celexa). So there are a few options out there and if prozac doesnt work out you have options. Some people prefer one of the ssris to the others - thats not uncommon. I personally am on paxil, but lexapro seems to be the most popular choice in this day and age. Testing has showed similar efficacy for lex with zoloft nad paxil, but a better side effect profile. As a general rule too, paxil (and luvox which I havent mentioned because it is only available for OCD patients in the US) are a little more sedating than the other ssris, so they often suit the anxious panicky types better. On the other hand, zoloft and prozac tend to be a little more stimulating and are often better for people with solomnent depression (tired all the time etc). Celexa and lex sit right in the middle. I'll keep looking at this thread so feel free to post if you like to discuss etc.

chimpmaster
Sorry I havent posted in a while. I turned 30 the other day and it was kind of a big weekend. Im glad to hear you are doing better on the prozac, and hopefully that hr a day will disappear quickly. Sorry to hear about your friends in jail; your concerns about xanax are justified in some ways as it can become a very addictive drug. It is also often handed out like candy by gp's for people with anxiety and panic attacks, when in reality it is the strongest benzo and the most likely to cause addiction issues. Having said this remember you are on a very small dose so there is no need to panic (please excuse my poor humour). A less addictive option, and less potent (but longer lasting) is valium. You could discuss with your dr changing the xanax script to valium at some point (I am an ex-xanax, now valium person). If .25mg xanax works for you then 5mg valium would likely work too. Velvet Elvis
I was on celexa for a couple years. Libido was better than on any of the other SSRIs and orgasm was possible with some work. It worked well for anxiety and OK for depression. Once you've been on any of the SSRIs for a while you can try adding Wellbutrin to help with sexual side effects as well as energy and motivation.
