Jay22
Well my memory has been getting messed up ever since I started the Ativan, just took me a while to realize it and contact my doc. Now he's tapering me off of Ativan and I'm pretty worried what happens when it's gone. Should I ask for a replacement medicine? Do benzos typically interfere with memory or is it just the Ativan? I have BPD, possible bipolar, Ptsd, and GAD plus depression. I'm currently on Ativan 2mg, trazodone 150mg, Effexor 75mg, and geodon 80mg.
crtclms
Benzos can interfere with memory. However, just because that happened to you on Ativan doesn't mean it will happen to you with all benzos. I'm not promising you that you will find one that doesn't do that, but there is a fair chance that that is the case. You could ask your pdoc for another benzo, or if you are taking them for anxiety, and are not interested in experimenting with other benzos, maybe try an SSRI. Neurontin (an anti-convulsant) also helps some people. Have you tried buspar (which is *really* hit or miss)? And I am sure there are other treatments that I don't know about. Jay22
Thank you, I Finally talked to the doc and I almost done tapering off of the Ativan. I start my dosage of buspar tomorrow. I hope it works. What is the difference between buspar and Ativan? My doc said buspar takes longer to kick in.
Equivilency
I never had any memory problems with benzo's. There might be something else out there for you if buspar doesn't work.
dancesintherain
buspar's a whole different family of anti-anxiety med than ativan. ativan's one of the benzos (like klonopin, xanax, etc.). it's reportedly a hit or miss med (I haven't tried it), but there are some for whom it's really beneficial. I think it's in a class to itself.
Alien Navel Cord
i've read in several places that Ativan is considered one of the date-rape drugs because of its amnesic effects. when I first started taking it, I would have mini-blackouts which were scary at first but they went away after a while. Really? sounds crazy to me. I guess maybe in large enough quantities. I've never heard of it being well known for this.
