Antipsychotic induced weight gain and IBS

Recommended Posts

I currently take 200mg of chlorpromazine, 10mg of abilify, 300mg of lamictal, 50mg of Effexor, 45mg of buspirone and was just prescribed 145mcg of linzess for IBS. I've gained 50 lbs since February and I'm seeing a new pdoc who is more sympathetic to my weight gain concerns than my previous pdoc. We discussed adding the linzess to replace the Effexor for IBS and maybe adding topamax in January to control my weight. In what way does topamax cause weight loss and how effective is it normally for antipsychotic induced weight gain? The two APs are an absolute must for me at their current doses. What can help with the weight gain?????

Topamax is a mild mood stabilizer that causes weight loss but can have side effect of kidney stones and cognitive deficits.

A lot of people lose weight while on topamax.

My doc said if I gain weight with my current meds he is going to add topamax in 4 weeks to help lose weight.

I used to take qsymia which contains topamax with phentermine and I lost over 15% of my body weight quickly.

There are different ways topamax helps people lose weight. I never heard anyone not losing weight on topamax.

I hope you lose as much as u can to get to a healthy weight.

I never did.  I didn't gain weight, but didn't lose it either.
