Can't swallow pills

Recommended Posts

Hey!

Things are still going well with the Topamax, but I have an urgent question.

I went to the dentist (the practice has no clue about my beautiful mind--I choose to keep it private), but the team was very concerned about my tongue.

I can't swallow pills (I'm just a dork that way), and my tongue is constantly irriatated. Well, I guess it was more irritated than usual from all the new pills I've been, uh, pratically chewing, and they totally freaked.

They called me at home, telling me to talk to my dad about the consequences of long-term tongue irritation. (My dad's a cancer specialist.) Now my dad's even freaking out.

(I told the dentist the irritation was from Nexium.)

Okay. I can swallow my Lamictal (it kind of dissolves) and Klonopin, but I CANNOT, under any circumstances, swallow the Topamax (I just called the pdoc and asked him to call in for the sprinkles), the Seroquel (100mg), or the Trileptal (2 300mg horse pills). Can the Trileptal be crushed and put into yogurt or something?

Please help my, guys! I don't want oral cancer, which is a result of constant tongue irritation. I'm so afraid!

Could you get the Seroquel in 25mg capsules? That's what I'm taking at the moment (pharmacy doesn't keep 50mg for some reason. No idea why) and they are absolutely tiny. No idea how big the 100mgs are though, and if your problem is swallowing pills full stop, no matter how small, this ain't gonna help...but just a thought.

Hey WGO,

Awesome idea,

I went upstairs to my stash of Seroquel samples, and did find some 25s. They're pills, not capsules, but I'll be able to swallow them with a bit of effort. (Sad, but true.)

And thoughts about Trileptal? I'm really, really trying to get this one figured out by bedtime! I've called two pharmacy chains (CVS and Walgreen's), and both said I could crush the crap and put it in yogurt, but they didn't seem too sure, either. Any thoughts?

Okay. Wait. I have to learn how to swallow pills. I just have to. Everyone can swallow pills. Kids can swallow pills. Why can't I? It should be easy! Just put the fucking pill on your tongue and swallow. That's it. What's wrong with me? Can anyone give me pill-swallowing tips that can help me swallow pills like a big girl? I mean, yeah, I can crush pills and swallow bitty ones, but it's going to cost me (translation: my parents) a fortune, and that just isn't right. Please help, Oh wise pill poppers!

A quick google found this:

so trileptal oral definately exists!!

As for pill swallowing pills- I chuck them to the back of my mouth, take a big gulp of liquid, and swallow down. Or sometimes liquid first and then pills in, if first method doesn't work. If I get a mental block about it, I just can't do it. Good luck!

We taught my daughter how to swallow pills by practicing with tic tacs.

Choose a flavor you love, try swallowing one and then eat one to relax.  It took time, but she did learn the best ways to swallow.

She still tends to put the capsule under her tongue until she gets the straw in her mouth to drink - that way she doesn't taste it or gag.

We also have kool-aid for her to take pills with instead of water - it's not acidic but still has flavor.

You're not the only one - I never could take pills as a child.  My sister never was able to take them, even as an adult.

Good luck to you.

Okay. You guys kick ass. So, Trileptal oral does exist. Good to know. Very good to know. But I'm making it my personal goal to learn how to swallow pills. It's totally mental for me.

I just think of swallowing pills and my throat closes.

So, the tic tac thing. That sounds good. Very good. By that token, I could try to swallow sugar-free Lifesavers, too, right? (I'm diabetic.)

Any tips for getting over the mental block?

You literally just throw the pill to the back of your throat?

Here's what I tend top do:  either I take a mouthful of water, or I put the pill(s) in and take a mouthful of water.  THEN I kind of "suspend" the pils in the water.  Essentially, you feel like you're only swallowing the water, even with horse pills.  (Though I think those could be split to make them easier to swallow)  It's just a question of fooling yourself into thinking it's only water in there.

Try it with a Tic-Tac!  (and no, that tiny amount of sugar won't hurt ya)

i have trouble swallowing pills unless i take a mouthful of liquid first and then put the pill in.  the pill has to be suspended in the liquid, then i swallow.  if i feel it on my tongue, i swish until it is floating in the liquid.  i can take those 1200 mg horse pill vitamins using this method.

if one ever gets caught on the back of your tongue, dont panic, just take several big swallows of water..have it handy.

this has worked for me.  and i can't take a pill if i put it in my mouth first...i have to have a mouthful of water.

This is kind of a worst-case-scenerio. ASK A PDOC BEFORE TRYING THIS!!! One of my best friends takes so many pills that it hurts her tongue and stomach. Her pdoc has her actually take some by snorting them. I think she takes Adderall that way, and I'm not sure what other meds. Her husband is a police officer so I do believe her that she's taking her psych meds and not street pharmacuticals!

Again, it is what she has to do. I don't know if anyone else has to do this. She suffers a lot from having to take meds orally and just has to crush them up and put them up her nose, which she also hates but can do.

I know it's gross!

For the big (megavitamin) pills I even quickly tilt my head back as I swallow.

BTW, soda vs. plain water. The carbonation helps the pill glide down with

  much less friction.

Gelcaps and similar coatings - hold in the mouth a few seconds so they get

wet and slick.  That's probably not a healthy mental image when you're

trying to decide whether to swallow.

I second what everyone else has said. Have one more tip: When my step-daughter was a kid, she had a terrible time swallowing pills. If I couldn't get the med in a liquid or dissolvable tab (which were less available then), I found that if I first coated the pill with either butter or margarine it would slide down much easier for her. And yes...after a while, she did learn how to swallow pills!

I never thought about the Tic Tac strategy. Brilliant! I'd be concerned about trying this with a lifesaver, though. They are pretty large, and not the right shape (I'd be afraid of it lodging in your throat). And if you chomp one of these up into smaller pieces for practice, well then you'd have sharp edges.

I did a search for sugar free Tic Tacs. While it doesn't appear they make them, I did find these links, which may be helpful:

Talks about the sugar/carb content of Tic Tacs -- sounds like it is negligible.

I've seen these Brown & Haley sugar free mints in super markets. Not sure how big they are, but from this photo they appear to be fairly small and to be the right shape for swallowing. According to Brown & Haley's site at: https://www.brown-haley.com/tmpl_catalog.cfm?section=206 "...They're available in peppermint, cinnamon or caffeinated peppermint - and best of all they're sugar free." This is how I've done it for years! I feel like one of those commercials on talk radio.  "It works, it really does, I can't imagine how many people don't know abou tthis but try it - it really works".

Except, I don't ever put the pill in first.  Get a big mouthful of water, tilt your head back, open you mouth and pop the pills into the waiting water and swallow.  Works, works, works.

My husband who would NOT do it my way for years - finally switched when he had throat cancer and things were hard to swallow.

Yep, I chuck the pills to the back of my throat*. But there has to be liquid. Always liquid.

*This possibly works cos all mine are capsule shaped, with the exception of the tiiiiny Seroquel. When I took Nitrazepam (big, round buggers) it didn't work- had to break them into small pieces first.

I can't thank you enough for your wonderful ideas and tips. (And, above all, for not making fun of me.)  ;) Now, the winner for best pill-swallowing trick goes to (drum roll please......): CNS! Congratulations, CNS! Your statuette (can you swallow it?) is on its way!

JB :-)
